Norris the Stork returns to the Crocworld display
Submitted by: Agnes Matladi
One of Crocworld Conservation Centre’s most famous residents, Norris the Stork, will be back on display this year! Norris is being reintroduced to his mate as part of the centre’s efforts to produce more Marabou Storks. This initiative is one of Crocworld’s many breeding programmes, aimed at enhancing the genetic diversity of threatened species.
Norris has been a key participant in the breeding programme, successfully fathering several chicks over the years, including two last year. Busani Mthiyane, Crocworld’s Animal Curator, commented: “We are patiently monitoring and observing his behaviour towards his mates. The introduction of this Marabou Stork comes with the intention of increasing their breeding rate as we now have two males and one female on display.”
The Role of Marabou Storks in Ecosystems
Marabou Storks are unique birds that breed during the dry season. They play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance by scavenging on carcasses, which helps reduce waste and limit the spread of disease.
