On 17 April 2026, the E-Waste Recycling Authority (ERA NPC) joined forces with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) for a successful community Imbizo held at the Thabo Moorosi Multi-Purpose Centre in Mothibistad.
Led by the DFFE Deputy Minister, Bernice Swarts, the event focused on bringing sustainable electronic waste (e-waste) management solutions to the Ga-Seonyana Local Municipality.
Environmental Impact And Community Participation
The initiative yielded significant environmental results, with 7,592.4 kilograms of e-waste collected through 114 individual transactions.
Residents were encouraged to clear their homes of redundant electrical appliances and devices, receiving vouchers or cash in kind as a reward for their participation in the circular economy.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public sector and producer responsibility organisations.
She noted that while the community is rewarded for recycling, the department remains steadfast in holding manufacturers accountable for the safety and compliance of the chemicals used in their production processes.
The Deputy Minister expressed her gratitude to ERA NPC and Get Metal for their logistical support and commitment to adhering to rigorous environmental procedures.
Expanding Access To E-Waste Services
For ERA NPC, the Imbizo programme is a vital component of its national mission to extend specialised waste services into underserved rural areas.
By facilitating the safe removal of hazardous materials, the project reduces environmental risks and household toxicity.
Furthermore, it fosters inclusive economic growth by educating local communities on the value of e-waste and creating a foundation for local enterprise development within the recycling sector.
Stakeholder Support
The success of the Kuruman event was made possible through the dedicated support of various stakeholders.
Special thanks are extended to Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts, Deputy Director-General Mamogala Musekene, and the leadership of the Ga-Seonyana Local Municipality for their role in mobilising the community.
Next Phase Of The Programme
Following the impact made in the Northern Cape, ERA NPC and the DFFE are preparing to take the programme to the Eastern Cape.
The next Imbizo is scheduled to take place in May 2026, continuing the drive to ensure that every South African has access to responsible e-waste disposal facilities.
About ERA NPC
ERA NPC is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the collection and responsible recycling of electronic waste.
By bridging the gap between producers, government, and the public, ERA NPC works to protect the environment and support a sustainable, inclusive economy through the management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
