Will SA’s R1 Trillion Infrastructure Investment Repeat Past Mistakes? New White Paper Shows How to Avoid Losses
Written by: Marie Le Roux Save to Instapaper
Johannesburg – Wednesday, 4 June 2025 – South Africa plans to invest R1 trillion in new infrastructure over the next three years, according to the annual State of the Nation address. Yet evidence shows that infrastructure projects repeatedly lose time, funds and human resources to the same, unnecessary mistakes. A new white paper aims to help stakeholders avoid these traps.
"Beyond the Blueprint: Strategic Lessons from South Africa’s Energy Infrastructure Projects" is the first in a new series of white papers by award-winning development economist Kalnisha Singh. Singh, founder of acclaimed consultancy KD Strategies, draws on 17 years of frontline implementation across multiple sectors. The result is a practical guide filled with solutions that can eliminate past errors.
This first white paper in the Beyond the Blueprint series looks at the common, often hidden, issues that cause infrastructure projects to falter, if not fail outright. Since the same mistakes happen time and again, this paper provides a framework for stakeholders to prevent these recurring mistakes.
"Infrastructure that only looks good on paper is no longer enough," says Singh. "We need to build systems that work in the real world." With "Beyond the Blueprint" she aims to provide the smart thinking needed to make that happen.
"Beyond the Blueprint" will launch with a live online event on Wednesday, 25 June 2025 from 13h00-14h00 CAT. Author Kalnisha Singh will present the main findings of the energy infrastructure white paper alongside host Marie Le Roux.
Leaders and decision-makers in infrastructure, energy, and other development fields will gain a valuable summary on how to avoid expensive past mistakes. Live attendees will also enjoy the live Q&A session and first access to the new white paper.
Attendance is free of charge, but advance booking is essential at: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/1tt1hLWKTweWQCgBqOR55g
