BPA-free baby bottles gets CANSA Seal of Recognition

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is proud to announce that baby product manufacturers, NUK, have been awarded its Seal of Recognition, recognising NUK as a CANSA Smart Choice.
“We play an important ‘watchdog’ role for South Africans by advocating safe products that reduce their cancer risk and join hands with partners that take the responsibility of South Africans' health seriously,” says Sue Janse van Rensburg, CANSA’s CEO.

CANSA has been investigating the role of man-made chemicals as an environmental and cancer-causing threat. Recently attention was focused on artificial chemicals such as plasticisers in some clingwraps and soft baby toys as well as bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate baby bottles.

In August 2008, CANSA called on the Government to protect children against harmful chemicals in toys and baby bottles by issuing a statement on the CANSA website and alerting the media to this. In its quest to combat the impact of many man-made chemicals detrimental to our health, CANSA is awarding its Seal of Recognition to consumer products free of all known carcinogens (cancer causing factors), produced and manufactured by socially responsible companies, conscious of consumer health.

In May this year, France joined a growing list of governments placing limits on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in food and beverage containers intended for small children as its National Assembly approved a ban on manufacturing, importing, exporting, or selling baby bottles made with the chemical. Denmark and Canada have adopted similar nationwide regulations

William Wertheim Aymes, Managing Director of Artemis Natural Products (NUK Agent for Southern Africa), recently announced that NUK has made the decision for all NUK baby bottles and accessories to be ‘BPA’ free. “This decision was made due to the fact that we cannot be too cautious with products that affect our children,” he says.

NUK South Africa has had two BPA free options available on the market for many years but it was recently decided to change its whole bottle range as well as all bottle accessories to contain no BPA.

About NUK
Everything we do for our children has an impact on later life”. Based on this conviction, NUK has dedicated itself to develop products that support and promote the healthy development of children consistently and long term. More than 50 years ago Dr. med dent. Mueller and Prof. Dr. Dr. Balters used their expert knowledge of orthodontics to develop a teat and soother that not only calm Baby, but simulate breast feeding as closely as possible. Breast feeding or feeding with the NUK Teat helps to preserve sufficient space for erupting teeth by strengthening and enlarging the jaw area, thus promoting healthy overall development in the long term. This gives parents all over the world that secure feeling of doing the right thing – right from the start. This is why most Orthodontists use NUK for their own children.
