What a .co.za domain really costs in 2026, and the fees owners forget

Johannesburg, 22 September 2026: South African businesses renewing or registering .co.za domains should expect small price changes from October, when the ZA Domain Name Authority's wholesale fee rises by about 6.2%. A price check of six well-known local providers in September 2026 shows the headline cost of a .co.za is still low, but the renewal price and the extras needed to make a domain useful matter far more than the first-year special.

What a .co.za costs in 2026

A price comparison published by EmailPros, a Roodepoort-based business email service, found that a new .co.za costs roughly R99 to R200 for the first year at South African providers, with most sitting between R99 and R110. Renewals clustered around R99 to R110 a year. Transferring a .co.za between registrars was free at most of the providers checked.

The outlier was a provider charging R197 to register a standalone .co.za but only R99 to renew it, the reverse of the usual pattern.

The October fee increase

Every registrar pays a wholesale fee to the registry for each .co.za, then adds its own margin. ZADNA links that fee to inflation and adjusts it each October. For 2026, the increase of about 6.2% from 1 October takes the wholesale fee from about R65 to about R69 per domain per year.

That is a small amount per domain, but registrars may pass some or all of it on. Since October 2024 the .za registry has also allowed .co.za domains to be registered for up to five years at once, although many registrars still sell one year at a time. Paying for several years where it is offered can shield a business from future increases.

"The domain itself is rarely the expensive part," said Moses Lukhwareni, founder of EmailPros. "What catches people out is forgetting the renewal date, or discovering after they have paid that a domain on its own does not give them a working email address."

The costs people forget

A registered domain is only a name. To send and receive mail on the domain, or to run a website, a business needs more. The main extra costs are:

• Email hosting, which stores the mailboxes and filters spam. Entry-level email-only hosting from one large local provider starts at R64 a month, about R768 a year, with the domain charged separately.
• Web hosting, if the business wants a website as well.
• DNS records such as MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC, which route email correctly and help keep it out of spam folders.
• An SSL certificate for secure webmail and websites, often free but still requiring setup.
• Setting up mailboxes on phones and in Outlook, either in the owner's own time or at a technician's fee.

Taken together, a realistic do-it-yourself first year for one business email address comes to roughly R870 to R970 before setup time.

The price of letting a domain lapse

An expired domain takes the website and email down with it. Clients receive bounce-backs, and the business may only notice when someone phones to ask why. After a short grace period, domains usually enter a redemption stage, where recovery is much more expensive: one registrar lists a redemption fee of R215 for a .co.za. If that window is also missed, anyone can register the name.

Choosing where to buy

Owners are advised to compare renewal prices rather than first-year offers, confirm whether a "free domain" is free only for year one, and make sure the domain is registered in the name of the business rather than a web designer or friend who may be hard to reach later.
