Markham’s What About The Boys Initiative Reaches R1.5 Million Fundraising Milestone

Markham Raises R1.5 Million To Support Youth Development Through What About The Boys Initiative

Cape Town, South Africa – Markham has announced that its What About The Boys (WATB) initiative has reached a significant milestone, raising R1.5 million in support of the programme. The funds will be formally handed over at an upcoming cheque presentation, marking another important step in the brand’s ongoing commitment to social impact.

Now in its fourth consecutive year of supporting the initiative, Markham continues to invest in the development of South Africa’s youth. What began as a bold commitment has evolved into a sustained movement focused on purpose, community, and measurable change.

Addressing A Critical Social Challenge

In South Africa, more than 60% of children grow up without active father figures, while gender-based violence remains a national crisis, with a woman’s life lost every three hours.

These realities highlight the importance of early intervention and the need to support young boys with positive role models, emotional guidance, and safe spaces for self-expression.

The What About The Boys initiative is built on the belief that equipping boys with these tools can help shape a generation of emotionally intelligent, confident men who value empathy and respect. By challenging outdated notions of masculinity, the programme aims to break harmful cycles and contribute to stronger communities.

A Growing Movement With Measurable Impact

Markham’s ongoing involvement has enabled the initiative to expand its reach and deepen its impact over the past four years.

Through activities such as movie screenings, structured workshops, and facilitated discussions, WATB creates environments where young people can engage in meaningful dialogue, receive mentorship, and develop essential life skills.

The brand has observed tangible outcomes within participating schools and communities, reinforcing the value of sustained investment in youth development.

Strong Support From Customers And Community

The success of this year’s fundraising efforts was driven by both internal teams and customer participation.

Two crew neck designs, along with four specially created T-shirts, played a key role in achieving the R1.5 million target. These collections demonstrated how fashion, when aligned with purpose, can mobilise communities and drive real change.

Nicol Rademeyer, Head of Marketing at Markham, emphasised the importance of collective effort.

“We are incredibly proud to have reached the R1.5 million target for this financial year. This is our fourth year supporting the programme, and our commitment remains as strong as ever. We have seen the impact firsthand, the growth, the conversations, and the positive change taking place, and we truly believe this work is crucial for our country.”

A Shared Commitment To Lasting Change

Rademeyer also acknowledged the role of customers and partners in achieving this milestone.

“This milestone belongs to everyone who supported the campaign. From our teams on the ground to every customer who purchased a T-shirt, you made this possible. We are deeply grateful and encourage our supporters to continue walking this journey with us.”

As Markham prepares to hand over the R1.5 million cheque, the brand reaffirms its long-term commitment to the What About The Boys initiative and its broader mission to create meaningful, lasting change.
