Crocworld Bids Farewell to Centre Manager, James Wittstock

After guiding Crocworld Conservation Centre through one of the most challenging periods for tourism, James Wittstock (29) will step down as Centre Manager in January 2025. Wittstock will be handing over leadership to incoming Centre Manager, Susan Badat, as he embarks on a new journey in Mozambique.

A Legacy of Growth and Resilience

Wittstock joined Crocworld in August 2019 as Reptile Curator and transitioned to Centre Manager just over a year later. Reflecting on his tenure, Wittstock remarked:
"Everything from the way we care for the animals to the species we house has evolved, with exciting projects improving the experience for both animals and visitors. We’ve added new species, including two crocodilian species, and undertaken significant refurbishments."

One of the standout upgrades has been the Fish Eagle Café, now a popular spot featuring a wraparound deck with ocean views. Patrons enjoy fresh meals, cocktails, and desserts while spotting whales and dolphins in the distance.

Overcoming Challenges

The pandemic was a particularly testing time for Crocworld, forcing the centre to close for 145 consecutive days. However, Wittstock highlighted the resilience of the team:
"Despite the closure, our staff stayed committed, coming in daily to care for the animals. This strong culture and dedication are the backbone of Crocworld's success."

Exciting Additions

Under Wittstock’s leadership, the centre expanded its offerings, including:

  • WildED: A conservation-focused educational organisation hosting tours, hikes, and holiday programmes.
  • Jikaleza Outdoor Adventures: A unique zipline and treetop obstacle course, blending fun with physical activity.

A Unique Setting and Standards

Wittstock described Crocworld as a place that stands apart due to its ocean views, coastal forest, and birdlife, paired with international husbandry standards:
"Our attention to detail in animal care and rehabilitation is unmatched. The team and the setting make this one of the most incredible working environments."

Moving Forward

While Wittstock is moving to Mozambique to join Crookes Brothers Ltd as Quality Process Manager at Murrimo Macadamias, he expressed confidence in Susan Badat’s leadership:
"I want to thank everyone who has supported Crocworld, including our partners at KZN Wildlife, FreeMe, local vets, and conservationists. I know Susan will continue driving the centre's success."

Looking Ahead

Crocworld Conservation Centre is set to embark on an exciting new chapter under Badat’s leadership. Visitors can look forward to even more innovative offerings while enjoying the centre’s dedication to wildlife conservation and education.
