In a media statement on 02 May 2022, the Aquila Collection announced the birth of a baby rhino boy from the surviving mother of the December 2021 rhino poaching incident.
On Saturday 07 May 2022, the reserve staff were thrilled to discover another addition to the crash. The gender of the calf is still unknown as the mother is very protective of the baby and not allowing the reserve teams to come in close proximity to determine the baby’s sex.
Owner Searl Derman stated: “we are blessed with the increasingly thriving and growing crash at our Western Cape private game reserves and this second birth in the last week is another joyous moment. I am proud of the work our Saving Private Rhino and 24 Hour Rapid Rhino Response teams are doing around the clock as it forms a major part of the conservation initiatives ensuring the strengthening of the gene pool and ultimately the survival of the species”.
According to the reserve management and monitoring teams “the baby is doing phenomenally well, and the playful calf is drinking from its super protective mom’s milk and is healthy”.
