Akido Malabela's Journey Through YES Programme: From Graduate to Professional Photographer
Submitted by: Youth Employment Service
Before joining YES, Akido Malabela, from Germiston, Gauteng, was uncertain about his next steps after graduating from Tshwane University of Technology. Faced with concerns about potential unemployment, he remained optimistic and hopeful about his future.
In 2022, at the age of 25, Akido joined the YES programme, sponsored by Telkom SA and hosted by Tilt Culture, taking on the role of a tourism content creator supervisor. This opportunity marked a turning point in his career, enabling him to earn through various gigs and gain valuable experience working with major brands.
Pivotal Career Milestones
The transformative experience within the YES programme inspired Akido to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Photography, which he completed in 2023. His dedication was rewarded when he was honoured as the Top Student in his programme, earning a scholarship from Tshwane University of Technology.
Among his accomplishments:
- Earning both a National Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Commercial Photography.
- Participating in the Youth4Tourism (Y4T) Art Exhibition at the Sanlam building, where four of his images were selected. He won third prize for his photograph titled "The Tembisa Cow."
Through the YES programme, Akido experienced several career-defining moments, including his first flight and a significant opportunity to shoot for Mercedes-Benz, where he even met the CEO. He also played a key role in the Slow Lounge Campaign, where two of his images were displayed.
Building a Thriving Business
At 27, Akido now runs his own business, Malabela Photography, as a professional photographer based in Tembisa, Gauteng. One of the most notable achievements in his business includes traveling to three international airports—OR Tambo, Cape Town, and Durban International—for the Slow Lounge Campaign. Sharing this milestone with his mother, who has been supportive since he started his business in front of her, and receiving pride from his uncle, a former photographer, has been a personal highlight in his career.
Initially an introvert, Akido struggled with networking but has since overcome these challenges. Managing his business requires constant creativity and innovation, and he consistently develops new ideas on a monthly and yearly basis.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth
To overcome challenges, Akido began collaborating with more experienced individuals and found a mentor who provided invaluable guidance and boosted his confidence. Staying updated on industry trends and learning new skills has been essential. The modules on the YES app have also been instrumental in teaching him professionalism and effective client management.
Akido’s passion for learning is evident as he views his journey as one of continuous growth. He is constantly expanding his business by working with diverse clients and delivering high-quality, impactful photographs. His career is thriving, and he feels deeply fulfilled.
Looking to the Future
Akido believes that the YES programme is about seizing opportunities with dedication and effort. The achievements he has reached through YES would have taken much longer without this platform. For someone from the township, proving oneself requires immense hard work, and YES made this process more accessible. While talent is important, Akido recognises that networking is essential for success, and YES has been instrumental in turning his dreams into reality.
Looking forward, Akido aspires to travel across Africa and beyond, capturing diverse sub-cultures and exploring different countries through his lens. He aims to exhibit his work internationally and plans to pursue a master’s degree while growing his business, Malabela Photography.
