Volvo Through the Decades on South African Roads

Volvo 122S Amazon
In 1950, Volvo officially touched down in South Africa. The iconic Volvo 122S (Amazon) was assembled locally at the Motor Assemblies plant in Durban’s Wentworth district between 1960 and 1973 — cementing its place in the country’s early motoring heritage. More than just a car, the Amazon was a revolution on wheels, bringing the world's first three-point safety seatbelt to South African families.
Volvo P1800
Built from 1961 to 1973, the Volvo P1800 gained fame when Roger Moore drove it in The Saint (1962-1969). Styled under Italian designer Pietro Frua, with Pelle Petterson credited for the final shape, the P1800’s elegant lines turned heads on South African streets from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Today, it remains a sought-after classic.
Volvo 850 R
Following the success of the limited-run 850 T-5R, the mid-1990s Volvo 850 R brought that same performance spirit to South Africa. With its turbocharged five-cylinder engine and understated yet sporty design, it delivered genuine sports car pace in a family sedan (or wagon). Fresh from Volvo’s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) campaign, the 850 R arrived with motorsport credibility that only cemented its reputation as a local hero.
Volvo XC90
Introduced in 2002, the first-generation XC90 quickly became the unofficial car of choice for Sandton and Constantia families, blending safety, luxury, and practicality in a seven-seater package. Most buyers opted for the sensible engines, but Volvo also offered a 232 kW 4.4-litre V8 which gave the family SUV a surprising performance edge.
Today: The All-Electric EX90
With AI-driven driver support, LiDAR technology, and all-electric engineering, the EX90 is Volvo’s most advanced vehicle yet — a new era of safety, technology, and sustainability. Offering up to seven seats, an impressive all-electric range, and the quiet confidence of Scandinavian luxury, it carries the spirit of the seatbelt into the future. An unseen guardian, always present, always protecting.
