Subaru’s all-new Outback earns international recognition ahead of local arrival in late 2026

Subaru’s all-new seventh-generation Outback has already begun building strong international momentum ahead of its arrival in the local market later this year, having recently been named one of AutoTrader US’s Best New Cars of 2026. Selected from hundreds of new vehicles available to consumers, the recognition highlights the Outback’s capability, versatility and bold new design, reinforcing its position in a highly competitive segment.

This latest accolade adds to a growing list of honours achieved in overseas markets, including the prestigious IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick+ rating. This underscores Subaru’s ongoing commitment to safety and further strengthens the Outback’s appeal as a dependable and well-rounded SUV, suited to a wide range of driving conditions and lifestyles.

A New Chapter for the Outback

The new Outback represents a comprehensive evolution of the nameplate, morphing into a true SUV, as opposed to its wagon-based predecessors. As such, the Outback continues to offer the versatility that has defined it for more than three decades, while introducing meaningful improvements that align with the expectations of modern customers.

Performance and Capability

Globally, the latest Outback is offered with a choice of two four-cylinder Boxer engines: a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre and a turbocharged 2.4-litre. The former produces 137 kW and 254 N.m of torque, with the latter boosting outputs to 194 kW and 382 N.m. Both engines are paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission).

Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive remains a defining feature of the Outback, delivering assured handling and stability across a wide range of road and weather conditions, from city streets to more demanding terrain. For everyday driving, Subaru’s advanced EyeSight driver assistance system adds an extra layer of safety by monitoring surrounding traffic, pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing driver confidence on the road.

Strong Global Recognition

“The continued global recognition for the new Outback reflects the strength of the product and its relevance to today’s customers,” commented Nteo Nkoli, National Marketing Manager for Subaru Southern Africa. “As we prepare to introduce the Outback to the South African market in 2026, these accolades provide added confidence in what the latest Outback delivers in terms of capability, safety, and everyday usability.”

Looking Ahead to Local Launch

As anticipation builds ahead of the local debut, the new Outback is well-positioned to continue the legacy of a model that has long resonated with customers seeking a practical and capable vehicle. Additional information, along with local specification, will be announced closer to the Outback’s on-sale date later this year.
