Last Word Makanyane Set To Reopen In July 2026 Bringing New Life To A Safari Favourite
Written by: TNW Save to Instapaper
We’re thrilled to share some wonderful news. Makanyane Safari Lodge, a long-time favourite for safari-goers, will reopen as Last Word Makanyane from July 1, 2026.
Makanyane has always had a special kind of magic with a sense of seclusion, a true connection to the bush and the feeling that you’ve found a rare pocket of calm in the wild. Now, we are giving this much-loved lodge the Last Word makeover and breathing new life into it through thoughtful enhancements, refreshed spaces and the warm, intuitive hosting that turns a beautiful place into a stay people talk about for years.
Set in Madikwe on the eastern side of the reserve, Last Word Makanyane sits on privately owned land just 20 minutes from the Eastern Airstrip.
At its heart are eight private suites overlooking the Marico River, which flows all year round. River frontage like this is rare in Madikwe with only a small portion of the river running through the reserve. Last Word Makanyane enjoys full river frontage and wide, uninterrupted views.
Guests will be able to traverse the Madikwe reserve while the privacy of our own land unlocks something truly special. With areas accessible only to our vehicles, we have a blank canvas to create once-in-a-lifetime moments that are simply not possible elsewhere in the reserve – from bush dinners and star beds to unforgettable celebrations and special occasions.
“Makanyane” means African wild dog in Tswana – an animal known for loyalty, intelligence and extraordinary teamwork. It’s a fitting symbol for this next chapter shaped by people who work seamlessly together, notice the small things before you ask and create the easy sense of belonging that defines a great safari.
As with every Last Word property, the heart of the experience will be our simple promise: lovely people, lovely places and lovely food now reimagined in a safari setting that feels deeply personal, quietly luxurious and wonderfully unhurried.
