Underdogs Take Over on Day 3 of the 2024 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Masters Surfing Championship

Excellent heats from Team SA's Gary Van Wieringen and Tyrell Johnson.Surf City El Salvador – A solid six-to-eight-foot swell hit El Sunzal for day three of the 2024 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Masters Surfing Championship (WMSC). The powerful groundswell provided epic waves, completing Main Round 2 in all divisions and Repechage Round 2 in four divisions. Main Round 3 for men's Masters (over 40) and Grand Masters (over 50) also saw top performances.
Excellent Heats from Gary Van Wieringen (RSA) and Daniel Garcia (ESP)
2011 Masters Silver Medalist Gary Van Wieringen (RSA) claimed another solid victory, scoring a massive 17.97 heat total, including waves of 9.07 and 8.90. His stellar performance left competitors like Jojo de Olivença (BRA) and Mike Latronic (HAW) trailing, as Van Wieringen’s heat confirmed his top form.

"I was looking so forward to coming back... being back for my third Masters, competing against some of the bigger names, I've been so grateful," said Van Wieringen.
Tyrell Johnson (RSA) and Gilbert Brown (CRC) Shine in Men's Masters
Tyrell Johnson (RSA) delivered an incredible performance in Men's Masters, scoring a 17.17 heat total with a 9.00 and 8.17. Johnson’s smooth turns and powerful carves had him drawing comparisons to waves back home in Nahoon Reef. "The waves... are reminding me of back home... Stoked, really happy," said Johnson.
While Johnson ruled the heat, Gilbert Brown (CRC) scored the highest single wave of the day with 9.17, setting up both surfers for a strong finish.
