South African Surfing Team to Compete in Ocean Indien Challenge on Réunion Island
Submitted by: Craig JarvisThe South African Surfing Team is heading to Réunion Island to take part in the prestigious Ocean Indien Challenge, bringing together elite surfers from across various regions for a week of thrilling competition.
What Is It?
The Coup De Surf Francophonie and Ocean Indien Challenge are high-profile tournaments uniting surfers from countries such as India, South Africa, Mauritius, and French-speaking regions like Senegal, Tahiti, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France). The event will be held on the picturesque shores of Réunion Island.
When Will It Take Place?
The competition runs from 17 to 24 November 2024.
Who’s in the Team?
The South African lineup features:
- Anastasia Venter (Jeffreys Bay)
- Zoe Steyn (East London)
- Lorenzo Perels (Jeffreys Bay)
- Daniel Emslie (East London)
Liam Wood serves as the team’s coach, while Danielle Powis manages the squad.
Why This Tournament?
Originally a regional event called the Elio Surf Challenge, organised by the Saint-Leu Surf Club, this tournament has grown into an international affair under the guidance of the Union of Indian Ocean Surf Federations (UFSOI). The event now serves as a significant platform for surfers across the Francophonie and the Indian Ocean regions.
How Does the Competition Work?
The tournament features three main contests:
-
Indian Ocean Cup
Pitting teams from South Africa, India, Mauritius, and Réunion Island against each other. -
Francophonie Cup
A clash of talents from Sénégal, Tahiti, Aquitaine (France), Mauritius, and Réunion Island. -
International Cup
This final showdown includes all participants from the previous cups, culminating in a major event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Réunion Island Surfing League.
Safety
The safety of competitors is paramount. The Shark Lookout Program and the Water Patrol will provide vigilant supervision throughout the tournament. All surfing sessions will take place in secure areas, ensuring the well-being of everyone involved.
Where About Will the Surfing Happen?
Surfing on Réunion Island is exceptional, occurring only in designated, protected areas. Here are some standout locations:
- Les Zaigrets: An A-frame peak, favouring a powerful right-hander.
- Les Brisants: Featuring three left-hand peaks breaking over the reef, offering barrels and turn sections.
- L’Hermitage: Known for world-class reef-pass waves, with potent, chunky barrels over a shallow reef.
- Trois-Bassins: A playful left-hander perfect for performance surfing.
