The SA Masters Surfing Team set to compete in the prestigious ISA World Masters Surfing Championships in Surf City El Salvador has been officially announced. The team will feature two women competitors—former champion Heather Clark (KZN) and Tasha Mentasti (CT)—as well as two men, Gary Van Wierengen (KZN) and Tyrell Johnson (EL).
The event, marking the seventh edition of the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship (WMSC), will be held from October 18 to 24, 2024, at the iconic El Sunzal point break. This much-anticipated competition returns after an 11-year hiatus, drawing top Masters surfers from around the globe.
Notable Previous Champions
The WMSC has a history of attracting elite competitors, with multiple Championship Tour (CT) champions among its roster of winners, including:
- Tom Curren (USA) – Three-time WSL Champion
- Layne Beachley (AUS) – Seven-time WSL Champion
- Rochelle Ballard (HAW)
- Rob Page (AUS)
- Heather Clark (RSA)
- Juan Ashton (PUR) – WMSC’s most decorated surfer
Team Excitement and Preparation
Gary Van Wierengen expressed his excitement for the upcoming event:"It's been 11 years since we have had a World Master's Event, and it's always an honour and privilege to represent my country, South Africa."

Similarly, Tasha Mentasti shared her enthusiasm:"I am honoured to represent South Africa again as an athlete. The last time I represented Team South Africa was 20 years ago. I look forward to heading back to El Salvador and flying the South African flag proudly."
Mentasti is particularly optimistic, given her familiarity with the venue from her time as Head Coach for the 2022 SA Junior Surfing Team:"We are a small team representing our beautiful country, but we all have big dreams and would love to return with a few medals."

Global Enthusiasm for the Championship
ISA President Fernando Aguerre expressed his excitement for the event's return, saying:"I am extremely happy for the return of the World Masters Surfing Championship, and what an ideal location in Surf City El Salvador."
