The RMB National Rowing Squad showcased their prowess on the international stage at the Memorial Paolo D Aloja Regatta in Piediluco, Italy, marking an impressive start to the season and setting a promising tone for the upcoming challenges. With eyes set on the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland in May, the team displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition.
On Day 1 of the regatta, the Women's Double scull duo of Katherine Williams and Paige Badenhorst delivered a stellar performance, claiming a hard-fought 3rd place finish. Their time of 7:21.89 was mere fractions of a second behind the 2nd place Czech Republic team (7:21.87), and the victorious Greece team (7:19.31). This impressive showing signaled the team's readiness to compete at the highest level.
Not to be outdone, the Men's Four comprising Henry Torr, James Mitchell, Jake Green, and Luc Daffarn put on a remarkable display of strength and teamwork, securing a commendable 2nd place finish with a time of 6:17.55. Despite fierce competition, the team fell just short of the experienced Italian boat, who clinched the top spot with a time of 6:14.6.
The momentum continued into Day 2 of the regatta, with the Men's Four showcasing their versatility in a new lineup, once again clinching a commendable 2nd place finish with a time of 6:30.96. Meanwhile, the Women's Double Scull faced tough competition, finishing 4th with a time of 7:38.82, behind Greece, Italy, and the Czech Republic.
Reflecting on the team's performance, Coach Thato Mokoena expressed confidence in their ability to compete at the highest level. "These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our athletes. We are thrilled with their performance and believe that they are well-positioned to step up their performance for success at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in May."
