Cape Town, October 2024 — South African big wave surfer Matt Bromley, hailing from Kommetjie in Cape Town, has once again been invited to compete in the prestigious Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational presented by Rip Curl. Recognised globally for his fearless approach and exceptional skills in the big wave arena, Bromley has earned respect both locally and internationally as a standout in extreme surfing.

Bromley’s invitation to the Eddie, one of the most exclusive and revered big wave events in the world, solidifies his position among the top surfers globally. For a complete list of entries, visit the official website: Eddie Would Go!.

Beyond competitions, the Monster Energy athlete is known for his free-surfing prowess in some of the world’s biggest and heaviest waves, such as Dungeons and Sunset Reef in Cape Town, Mavericks in the USA, Jaws and Waimea in Hawaii, Nias in Indonesia, and Mullaghmore in Ireland.

"Every year, I make the big trek over to Mullaghmore, Mavericks, Jaws, and Waimea on the crazy swells when everywhere else is maxed out," said Bromley. "I am incredibly proud to represent South Africa in the Eddie, the most prestigious surf event on the planet!"

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, will run between December 14, 2024, and March 13, 2025, provided the wave face heights consistently reach 40 feet. This historic event, which celebrates Hawaiian culture and the legacy of Eddie Aikau, honours the championship athlete and legendary waterman who remains a cultural icon in Hawaii.

"As a surfer from South Africa, we are far removed from the global action," Bromley noted. "However, we do have Dungeons, one of the heaviest and scariest waves in the world, although it rarely breaks."

The Eddie Aikau Invitational not only showcases the current generation of big wave surfers but also honours the legends who paved the way. The event, which last ran on January 22, 2023, drew over 2 million streaming views from fans across 195 countries.

The 39th annual Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational will continue its tradition of highlighting Hawaiian culture, sharing the rich legacy of Hawaii’s surfing history with the world. The nearby Waimea Valley, an area rich in historical and cultural significance, adds further depth to the celebration of Hawaiian heritage through this prestigious event.
