The phrase “storage unit” is synonymous with driving out to deserted locations, spending weekends moving things by yourself, and paying for more space than you need. A start-up named boxcloud (www.boxcloud.co.za), launched in Johannesburg in April of this year, promises to make “self-storage and moving a whole lot easier”.

boxcloud set out to digitise the storage industry (the name is, in fact, a play on cloud storage for your physical stuff) by enabling consumers to store and manage their stuff via an easy-to-use online interface and dashboard.

Here’s how it works. First decide if you need boxes and storage material or of you want to use your own. Once packed and sealed, schedule a collection date and time for boxcloud to come and collect your things (work, home, or anywhere really). Once collected, manage your stored items on your digital dashboard. When you need something back, simply click “Deliver”.

The cost for storing any size box or large item (e.g. bicycle, suitcase) is R49 per month. Collection of your stuff is always free – deliveries are also free provided you store your stuff for long enough. In addition, boxcloud brings new value-adds to the storage industry such as free insurance on all items stored.

The boxcloud team promises endless applications. “Space is a real commodity – we set out to meet the needs of the mom storing her daughter’s pictures from pre-primary school as well as the corporate aiming to free up office space – all digitally,” says Matt Stephanou, founder of boxcloud. “With the growth in apartment living, we also expect to see more people storing their seasonal clothes and sports equipment.”
