Archie makes his debut on Meghan and Harry's South Africa tour

Published: 27 September 2019

Cape Town, South Africa (CNN) Britain's Duke and Duchess of Sussex brought their son Archie to his first official engagement Wednesday -- a meeting with Nobel laureate and retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Marking his South African debut, four-month-old Archie met the beloved 87-year-old statesman when the family visited his legacy foundation in Cape Town.

The Sussexes are midway through a 10-day trip to southern Africa on behalf of the UK government.Footage posted to the official Sussex Royal Instagram account revealed the much-anticipated moment -- to the delight of royal fans around the world.Baby Archie could be seen being cradled by his mother Meghan as the family of three walked down a corridor to meet Tutu and his daughter, Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe.

Beaming from ear to ear, Meghan cooed "here we go" at the bouncing baby boy in her arms while proud father Harry looked on in delight.Harry then started making sounds as the family continued on to the meeting, prompting a squeal of amusement from his young son.Once welcomes were taken care of, the group went inside and sat down on sofas surrounding a coffee table laden with an impressive display of snacks.

The group shared a laugh over the number of cameras clamoring to get shots of the young royal. Harry quipped that "he is used to it already," according to Britain's PA Media news agency."He's an old soul," Meghan said of four-month-old Archie.

Tutu-Gxashe joked, "You like the ladies," to the baby, adding: "He's going to be a ladies' man."During the meeting -- which lasted roughly half an hour -- Tutu said he was "thrilled" by the "rare privilege and honor" of meeting the young British royals, PA Media also reported.

Wednesday was not the first time Prince Harry has met the retired archbishop. In 2015, he presented the South African statesman with the Insignia of an Honorary member of the Order of the Companions of Honour on behalf of the Queen, recognizing his services to UK communities and International Peace and Reconciliation.

Tutu, the first black archbishop of Cape Town, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts to end apartheid.Following the meeting, the couple's official Instagram account shared several photos from the engagement with a message from Meghan and Harry saying, "Thank you Archbishop Tutu for your incredibly warm hospitality, Archie loved meeting you!

The account also shared some video highlights from the encounter, including a heartwarming moment of Tutu asking Archie for a high five and another of him busting out a few dance moves in an attempt to grab the youngster's attention from across the coffee table. Later, Meghan attended her first engagements in Cape Town without Harry, who has traveled on to Botswana. One of the events was a visit to mothers2mothers (m2m), a charity training women with HIV to work as frontline health workers.

Twenty-nine-year-old Limpho Nteko, one of the women m2m has helped train as one of their "mentor mothers," welcomed the duchess to the engagement."It was such an honor to meet the Duchess of Sussex in person and share with her the incredible and important work that we do as mothers2mothers," she said in an m2m statement.

"It was an opportunity to shine a light on the impact we have had and the lives we have changed but also to highlight the hard work that still lies ahead to ensure that we create a generation that is healthy and free from HIV."Meghan took an opportunity at the event to give away some of Archie's clothes that she had brought from the United Kingdom."I just thought that, in the spirit of community, what's so nice is to be able to share some of the things that we have at home as well," the duchess explained. "We can obviously make sure anything you need is provided for you, but we've brought some of the things that my friends and I used for our kids and Archie that don't fit anymore.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have opened up to well-wishers at other engagements earlier this week about parenting Archie.

Tuesday afternoon, Meghan and Harry marked Heritage Day, a public holiday that celebrates South Africa's diversity of cultural traditions and beliefs, with a tour of the Bo-Kaap neighborhood in Cape Town. While there, they visited the home of Shaamila Samoodien for tea. Samoodien's sister, 61-year-old Nazli Edross-Fakier, told CNN that Meghan said "Archie is the most calm, beautiful, easy baby.

"Edross-Fakier added that the new mother also told her "he travels well" and slept most of the time on her chest."And then daddy said, 'He's come alive, he's shouting and screaming and carrying on,'" Edross-Fakier said.A royal source told CNN ahead of the tour that the Sussexes were hoping to include their son "at some point" but had been unable to say exactly when, as his age made a public appearance difficult to schedule.

Archie is thought to be youngest royal to go on an official tour, taking the title from his cousin, Prince George, who traveled with his parents to Australia in 2014 when he was eight months old.

Loeries 2019: Nando's fires up the design category

Published: 16 May 2019

Nando’s joins the Loeries to celebrate design Design from Africa and the Middle East finally gets the recognition it deserves with the expanded Nando’s Design category at the Loeries in 2019. This year’s category has been extended to recognise design from a much broader range of creative professionals. “We’ve expanded the design category beyond only brand communication to include areas of design such as retail furniture and product design, fabric, wallpaper, lighting, architecture and interior design, and even the design of signage programmes,” says Loeries CEO Andrew Human. He adds that the Loeries has long been recognised as the highest accolade in advertising and brand communication.

“A strong design award has been lacking for our region and this is a great opportunity for all designers to showcase their work and achieve recognition.” Design is woven into the Nando’s DNA, making Nando’s a natural partner for the Design category. “Design and creativity have been an intrinsic part of the Nando’s way of doing business.

Nando’s is the first local brand to collaborate with local designers at the scale it does,” says Deirdre King, Nando’s Brand Experience GM. She adds: “Putting our support behind the design community is important to doing business well. Our PERi-PERi power has charted new paths and careers for many local artists and their art. Putting that same fire behind the extended Design category for the 2019 Loeries gives us a chance to spice things up for the wonderful designers who will imprint their names onto this exciting category. According to Gaby de Abreu, Loeries board member and creative head of Switch Design, the awards are invaluable because they offer a chance for designers to showcase their work to a far greater audience.

“The Nando’s Design category at the Loeries is an opportunity to showcase excellence across disciplines in countries throughout Africa and the Middle East. For independent designers, it’s a unique chance to achieve recognition across the industry, reaching creatives internationally,” says de Abreu. “For a furniture designer working in an independent workshop or a graphic designer outside of the agency network, this year’s Loeries offers a chance to show the world what you’ve achieved,” he adds. The Nando’s Design category at the Loeries is open to designers across all the main disciplines. The entry deadline is 15 May and more information can be found on loeries.com.

Lorge: Empowering the Digital Communications Sector, through cutting-edge Business Management Systems ~ Genesis Articles Reports – January 2017 - Johannesburg South Africa

Published: 06 February 2017

- By Genesis Articles Global

Introduction

Leading supplier of specialised Business Management (BMS) and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions    Lorge Consulting Services has done it again. The Midrand-based powerhouse service provider   celebrates yet another milestone achievement by successfully supplying and installing a turnkey software solution for a market leader with niche’-specific and intricately demanding operational needs. This time it was for none other than iconic Digital Signage Specialist, Ethniks.

About Client:  Ethniks

Well, there’s a slim to zero chance that you haven’t directly or indirectly been exposed to Ethniks and their diverse range of innovative solutions. While you may not exactly know of them as “Ethniks, the Digital Signage Experts”, you’ve certainly come across their products and encountered their services on a frequent basis.

For instance, they put a smile on so many faces at the many MacDonald’s franchises through the supply and maintenance of digital menus and other informative, alluring and high-tech signage. In other instances, they help you locate your favourite store in major malls and shopping centres through robust wayfinder technology. You will typically feel their presence at the likes of corporates, multinationals operating in a host of industries, banks - as well as public and private spaces that either rely on, or can be advanced by digital signage and similar products suited to divergent applications.

Lorge mandated to deliver technologically adept solution for Ethniks

In January of 2016 discussions ensued between Ethniks and Lorge. The primary focus was to identify and implement a solution that would effectively address a major logistic and operational area. This dealt with being able to equip field technicians to not only communicate more efficiently in terms of day-to-day tasks, but also execute such duties with greater ease. In other words, the solution needed to enable enhanced functionality and interactivity. This would be in lieu of delivering technical, support, customer related as well as internal requests with superior efficiency and superb accuracy while working in the field or on the move.

The recommended solution

As a platinum certified Sage partner for over two decades, Lorge is a preferred supplier and implementer of associated products including Sage 300. This in conjunction with a relevant and comprehensive CRM solution was proposed and accepted as the solution of choice. A crucial component of the solution installed by Lorge, involved mobile technology. This represented a groundbreaking leap for the already well-established digital signage giant. While the installation as well as sophisticated tools and technology used can be rather technical, in layman’s terms this meant that the field technicians would be able to receive repair and related instructions via their mobile devices. They would also be able to attend to specific changes and reparations remotely – all in real time. It is interesting to also note that Ethniks digital solutions are underpinned by satellite transmission, making their adaptability, dynamic nature and service support extremely stable and responsive. The installed system needed to factor this consideration into the product, installation, and after-sales requirements.

CRM Product Manager at Lorge, Gustav du Plessis, Sage 300 Product Manager, Riekie Roux as well as Senior CRM Consultant, Glen Taylor, discussed the extent of the project as well as the intricate requirements for a successful installation. They confirmed that despite the complex nature of the implemented solution - which needed to be installed in a manner consistent with the high service-standards established by Lorge - the project rollout was seamlessly facilitated from March of 2016, with the system going live effective July 2016.

Benefits to Ethniks

In addition to the specific operational advantages of the above software solution, extensive system-wide benefits include considerable time-saving on previous processes - from quoting to technical updates executed. This naturally translates to improved technical and associated responsiveness, more effective communication, cost-savings in the medium to long term, minimised downtime, increased productivity, stronger customer service delivery and ultimately an improved top line.

Spokesperson for Ethniks and company accountant, Jaco le Roux, also confirmed that the organisation is already experiencing the positive impact of the relatively new system. They remain firmly confident in the training, ongoing support and effectiveness of the new software solution provided by Lorge. He also indicated that Ethniks has just begun to scratch the surface so to speak of the vastly intelligent software solution and its extensive capabilities.

To fully understand the solution delivered by Lorge it is worthwhile to consider the broad service and product offering of Ethniks in a little more detail. As a veteran of close on 30 years specialisation, Ethniks provides premium-quality infrastructure in conjunction with pioneering software and creative content integration - including customisation, implementation, technical and customer support. Products range all the way from general digital signage, to interactive information kiosks, to platforms suitable for employee training, solutions capable of interfacing with virtually any data source such as point-of-sale systems, others capable of integrating mobile friendly features like social media and much more. Furthermore, it’s no surprise that they deliver internationally acclaimed solutions, being partnered with SCALA software that power more than half a million screens in over one hundred countries.

Lorge leads the way

Lorge, as a multi-award winning organisation, is a preferred supplier and implementer of Sage X3, Sage 300, Sage CRM and Qlikview business and technology solutions in Africa. The company has implemented over 10 000 users across divergent economic sectors and is a trusted supplier for over 250 companies, more than a third of which are listed on the JSE Securities Exchange.

Additionally, the Ethniks project symbolises a new chapter in the expanding specialisation of Lorge’s service capabilities. This is paramount in a technologically advancing era that demands solutions which are increasingly mobile-friendly, more robust and align to progressive business and end-user trends. The success of this project also paves the way for the digital marketing industry as a whole, notwithstanding other industries that provide innovative solutions for the modern consumer and rely heavily on field technicians.

Big Data Analytics market would increase about 40% between 2014 and 2020, finds TeleResearch Labs

Published: 24 March 2015

TeleResearch Labs examines the scope and affects of big data on mobile vertical markets in its latest report: Vertical & Horizontal Worlds of Mobile.

TeleResearch Labs, a Maryland-based telecoms research company, foresees the worldwide expenditure on big data analytics/ hardware/ software touching US$125 billion in 2015. Big data projects would revolve around video/ audio/ imaging analytics. Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) solutions by IT vendors would gain traction.

Telcos have a huge opportunity in terms of big data analytics solutions in several vertical markets. Sectors such as retail, healthcare, utilities, media, financial services, security etc. are a few markets to which mobile operators could sell data under a DaaS business model.

In this, enterprise customers also present a prime business opportunity to telcos. The big data analytics market is projected to increase by almost 40% between 2014 and 2020.

Despite the applicability of big data analytics in almost all mobile vertical markets, telcos operating in such spheres often do not know how to use it and its various advantages. And so, many realise the need for big data's role in their operations but are not clear on what's actually required and in what manner to capitalise on big data opportunities. This necessitates that big data solution providers proactively think about what telcos actually require in their spheres of operations, and offer tailored solutions, enabling all-round mutual profitability for all associated telecoms players in the vertical market ecosystems.

For more matter and guidelines on how industry players can leverage effective partnerships in the realms of mobile vertical and horizontal markets for 2015 – 2018, visit: http://www.teleresearchlabs.com/view_document/73-vertical-a-horizontal-worlds-of-mobile http://www.teleresearchlabs.com/ Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. EWSETA Skill Summit unlocks opportunity for Saldanha Bay IDZ

Published: 23 March 2015

The EWSETA Skills Summit, taking place 17-18 March 2015 at the Protea Hotel in Saldanha Bay, this is a pioneering initiative of the EWSETA to bring discussions around governments broad economic policies including Ocean Economy into a regional forum. The stakeholders will come together to mobilise collaborative skills development programmes that will see gainful employment in the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone (SBIDZ), on South Africa’s West Coast.

The 330 ha SBIDZ was designated in 2013 as a zone dedicated to serving the oil and gas industry. It has attracted strong interest, mainly from fabricators. On 9 March 2015, the Transnet National Ports Authority announced a R9.65 billion investment in infrastructure projects at the SBIDZ. The project falls under the government's ‘blue economy’ plans of its Operation Phakisa and Oceans Economy initiative, announced by President Jacob Zuma in 2014.

EWSETA SKILLS Summit makes it possible for stakeholders to express what they are doing in their own capacity to feed into Operation Phakisa and how it can collectively support and unblock the challenges that are faced by stakeholders.

Theme

ThemedA Journey towards Skills Development for gainful employment in the West Coast’, the Summit will address the skills shortages surrounding the SBIDZ development as highlighted through various research reports commissioned in respect to the region.

With a long term goal to shape the landscape of skills development and training in the West Coast the Skills Summit is the starting point of a journey into new and ground breaking efforts by multiple stakeholders to contribute to the decade of the artisan national programme.

On the second day, delegates broke into commissions to discuss critical issues that contribute to an effective and inclusive pipeline touching on amongst others:

1.       Unlocking the potential of the Western Cape community to meet proposed demands

2.       How can exit strategies for learners from TVET colleges and other technical qualifications be increased?

3.       How can workplace learning be meaningfully addressed? Accreditation, process etc

4.       How can data be shared more effectively in the sector and region?

Through the summit, delegates will be given the opportunity to hear first-hand from government, industry, EWSETA and other key partners, including CHIETA and other relevant SETA’s on what skills development challenges, benefits and opportunities exist within the West Coast generally and the SBIDZ specifically. They will engage around possible skills interventions that they believe would eradicate poverty and unemployment in the region.

Speakers

Following the welcome from the Saldanha Bay Municipality, the Summit will be officially opened by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Mduduzi Manana, followed by an address by the EWSETA CEO, Errol Gradwell. Laura Peinke the executive for business development at  the SBIDZ Executive Stakeholder Management, will make a presentation on Realizing the untapped potential of the oil and gas and marine fabrication sectors whilst the SBIDZ associate for skills development Mr. Patrick Lakabane will provide an overview of the SBIDZ strategic skills development objectives. The day concludes with West Coast TVET College deputy CEO reflecting on the ‘Current Provision of a Skilled Workforce in the West Coast’.

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Trade & Industry (dti), Mzwandile Masina, will open the second day. This is followed by a panel discussion, ‘What are the challenges being faced in achieving our skills targets in the region’, facilitated by Lakabane. On the panel will be representatives of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT), Department of Higher Education & Training (DHET), Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), EWSETA, SBIDZ, Northlink TVET College, Saldanha Bay Municipality and South African Oil & Gas Alliance (SAOGA).

Following the commissions delegates will reconvene to report back and pledge their support.

Proud support from key stakeholders

“The South African Oil and Gas Alliance (SAOGA) supports the EWSETA Skills Summit in Saldanha Bay, which will serve to bolster the region’s capacity to provide skilled people for the anticipated oil and gas investments.  Skills development is one of the priorities of SAOGA and the industry it serves.  We look forward to the collaborative initiatives that will emanate from the Summit, knowing it will benefit all the roleplayers,” says Ebrahim Takolia, CEO of SAOGA.

“The Skills Summit will give us the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with the needs of industry to ensure that our training is relevant and contributes to local economic development. With the national unemployment rate hovering at 26%, it is of paramount importance that private and public sector join hands and share best practices in order to overcome the challenges hampering skills development.

“We are proud to be associated with the EWSETA Skills Summit and we are certain that the summit will give as a platform to collaborate and merge training initiatives. Together we can move the West Coast forward and provide a skilled workforce to unlock the region’s economic potential,” says Jooste-Mokgethi

The mandate of EWSETA is to anticipate, build and manage the skills development and training needs of the energy and water services sector, through strategic skills planning within the context of the NSDS III. It operates in the Electricity, Oil and Gas, Nuclear, Renewable energy and Water, Waste & Sanitation sectors.

To fulfil its goals, it has implemented a new structure that increases its capacity to service its stakeholders in a significantly improved manner. It has also formulated strategic partnerships with FET institutions, universities, government departments, business and international leaders within the energy and water sector.

MAMRE-ATLANTIS FISHERS NEGLECTED BY FISHERIES DEPARTMENT [DAFF]

THE FISHERS ENGINE OF SOUTH AFRICA [FESA]

MAMRE-ATLANTIS FISHERS NEGLECTED BY FISHERIES DEPARTMENT [DAFF]

Date: 12 March 2015

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries [DAFF]  – has once again neglected and disappointed the Fishing Communities of Mamre, Atlantis and Darling by not authorising them Fishing Access via the Bokbaai-, Lêbaai or Ganzekraal Area after The Fishers Engine of South Africa [FESA] has applied for access from the DAFF Minister, Senzeni Zokwana more than 5 months ago.

It has been precisely 5 months and two weeks since FESA has asked the Minister to authorise the use of the Bokbaai Area as a Launching Site for the Mamre-Atlantis Fishers. During the last few months – the only reply FESA has received from the minister was an acknowledgement letter indicating that this matter has been forwarded to the Office of the Director General, Edith Vries. Until date, no answer or progress on this issue has been sent from the Office of the Director-General

Mamre and Atlantis Fishers have to use the “Apartheid-set road to Yzerfontein” for Linefish- and West Coast Rock Lobster Catches, and some other launching sites are also used. Yzerfontein is the nearest legal Launching Site and FESA has made these bad economic conditions under which these fishers have to operate clear to the Fisheries Minister. Yzerfontein is between 42-44km away from Mamre (depending on the road taken) and with the distance to reach the fishing grounds, fishers can travel as far as 57km to fish. Depending on the engines used these fishers can spent between R1300-R1500 per fishing trip on petrol a day to lauch from Yzerfontein harbour (excluding their bait and other expenses). For the Minister to expect the poorest of fishers to spend between R1300-R1500 per day per fishing trip with Economically Unviable Exemptions (Interim Relief Programme Exemptions and Traditional Linefish Rights) is unthinkable, irresponsible and economically oppressing to these fishers and their communities.

Then this same Fisheries Department, DAFF has closed the Dasseneiland Area (Bokpunt) for Recreational Fishing for the current season – which mean that these fishers are totally neclegted and excluded from fishing from their nearest suitable Fishing Area, which is the Bokbaai-, Lêbaai-, Ganzekraal Area.

The FESA are of opinion that the part of Bokbaai Area that are so-called ‘private property’ – belongs to the citizens of this country as per its coastal status and the Constitution, the Integrated Coastal Management Act and the Bill of Rights. The FESA are in the process of rectifying this issue with other parties for the benefit of the Fisher People of Mamre, Atlantis, Darling and the rest of the citizens of this country.

Earlier this week FESA has asked the Minister of Fisheries, the Deputy Director General of DAFF, Mortimer Mannya and the Director-General, Edith Vries to meet with them as soon as is possible to resolve this Launching Site Authorisation matter.

A formal Complaint will also be lodged amongst others at The South African Human Rights Commission in due course to make fire under the minister and the Fisheries Department, DAFF

R4-Billion Lost Annually on CSI Projects in the Education Sector?

Published: 09 March 2015

With more than R16 billion being spent annually on Corporate Social Investment (CSI) projects in SA and about half that spent on technology-based projects in education, at least half of these projects fail, amounting to about R4 billion wasted annually mainly by JSE-listed companies.

Poorly managed projects, funds going missing, technology not being properly used and a lack of enthusiasm on the part of project recipients are some of the factors resulting in technology-based CSI educational projects failing. Sangari South Africa, a locally-based supplier of training solutions, says it has a history of success in CSI projects within the education sector. The company says there are key issues that need to be addressed as a prerequisite to a successful project.

“Engaging with all the stakeholders involved is crucial. This includes headmasters, teachers, parents, regional educational directors, as well as community bodies. Without regional, political and community buy-in, the project could be doomed for failure,” says Bez Sangari, MD of Sangari SA.

“Organisations too often put funding into a project that seems, on paper, to have no downside but is destined for failure because buy-in from all the participants has not been obtained,” he says.

“It is crucial to get community involvement in a schooling project. Communicating with parents about the benefits is important. In addition, if parents are offered educational classes at the same facility in the afternoons or evenings this add to the potential success of the project and enhances the utilisation of resources.”

The aim of any successful CSI project is to provide technology that enhances the learning experience, not simplifies it. Teaching systems should aim to convey knowledge and enable teachers to become more than just content experts, but experts in teaching that specific subject matter.

“In addition, regularly testing students’ progress is crucial, but often not done. This is because it draws too much on teachers’ time – composing and marking of tests is time consuming and arduous. Technology should be available to test students at any point during a lesson to provide feedback on their assimilation and retention, enabling the teacher to quickly take corrective action,” he says.

“Another goal is to elevate teacher skills and provide more knowledge to both teachers and students. The technology should challenge the student,” says Mr Sangari.

“There is a plethora of technology solutions available, but many are ineffective because of an often piece-meal approach to CSI projects. It is important to understand the specific issues and implications being experienced by the recipient institution. Only then should a solution that incorporates benchmarking of current performance, project management, appropriate technology, training, monitoring and evaluation, and regular reporting on the project progress. The technology should become an integral part of the subject being taught and not an add on.”
