ENTER THE EXCEPTIONAL NURSE CAMPAIGN ‘NIGHT RUN TO HONOUR NURSES’ NOW!

Published: 05 August 2019

Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, the nurses of our nation need you! Make sure you lace up those takkies, put on your lycra and enter the 2nd annual Exceptional Nurse Campaign Night Run taking place on Saturday 07 September and Saturday 31 August 2019 respectively. Why this particular run you ask? Well, it’s a great excuse to get out into the community and breathe in some fresh air, but more importantly you will be honouring and supporting all the exceptional nurses all around SA. At the same time, you will be raising much needed funds for bursaries so that more people can study to become exceptional nurses!

The 7km night route (to finish by 7pm) is symbolic of the 7-7 shifts our nurses work. “The purpose of the night run is to raise awareness of the critical shortage of professional nursing posts in South Africa and to promote a culture of honour and gratitude towards all,” says Sister Teresa Basson, the brain child of this event. “Nurses play an essential role in the medical profession and health care system, and we hope that through the work of The Exceptional Nurse Campaign and events that we host, we can change the tide of negative media coverage by highlighting all of the ‘exceptional nurses’ that help create beautiful miracles every day. Nurses not only form the backbone, but the beating heart of our Healthcare System.”

Sister Teresa started the Exceptional Nurse Campaign (T.E.N) after seeing how desperate the situation in some of our hospitals had become. Did you know that there is a critical shortage of professional and specialty nurses, not only in the public hospitals of South Africa, but all over the world? 46.7 million people in our country are totally dependent upon the National Department of Health for the healthcare services provided through 351 Public Hospitals and approximately 3000 Community Clinics. At present there is an estimated shortage of over 30 000 professional and specialty nurses currently employed in the Government Sector, where the Patient to Nurse ratio is sometimes 25:1 - that is 25 patients to be cared for by 1 nurse!

“The Exceptional Nurse Campaign (Campaign TEN) is a non-government, non-profit company committed to solving the growing health care crisis in South Africa due to a severe shortage of professional nurse posts,” explains Sister Teresa. “We appeal to the Department of Health to open more nursing posts. We aim to inspire and mobilise exceptional nurses to hospitals and clinics in South Africa where help is needed most, whilst at the same time promoting a culture of honour and sincere gratitude towards all nurses, nationwide.”

Entries cost R100 per person and R50 for children under the age of 12, with all proceeds being donated to the Exceptional Nurse Campaign Bursary Fund.

Get Out and About on the Next GTP Urban Trail Run

Published: 26 February 2019

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) is hosting the next event in its urban trail run series on 7 April 2019. The challenge is open to experienced and new runners from all across Cape Town, on a beautiful trail through Bellville’s public green spaces. Launched at the end of last year, the GTP Urban Trail Run traces a route starting in Tielman Marais Park, through Jack Muller Park and up to Tyger Valley, linking and activating Bellville’s green spaces.

The event features a 5-kilometre family run and a more arduous, challenging 14-kilometre run. Most of the route is off the tarmac, offering participants a chance to enjoy beautiful natural surroundings in the heart of the city. Fantastic prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each category and exciting lucky draw prizes will be on offer during the day. Every runner will receive a water-wise plant as a medal in recognition of their participation.

Warren Hewitt, GTP CEO explains the principle behind the GTP Urban Trail Run: “Quality public spaces are an important component in building cohesive urban communities. We want to see people using the natural green areas in our city every day, and not only on special event days. The GTP Urban Trail is a great way to introduce people to the green spaces that Bellville has to offer.” Bellville has 236 661 square metres of green parks. Tielman Marais Park is one link in the green chain of parks in Bellville that connect Elizabeth Park to Jack Muller Park and the green spaces leading to the Doordekraal Dam, behind Willowbridge.Entrance to the Bellville Urban Trail is R60 per runner for the 5km event, and R100 per runner for the 14km event.

Each entrant is asked to bring old and unused running gear and other clothes, which will be donated to local charities to bring dignity and care to the more vulnerable in our community. A percentage of the proceeds of the Bellville Urban Trail will be used to maintain and upgrade the running route to ensure maximum enjoyment for everyone in the future. After the event, the urban trail route will remain open for runners, walkers and strollers who want good quality, safe running, walking and leisure routes in their city.

Food trucks and other stalls will be available on the day, selling food, drink and other goodies. Participants can register for the event on Quicket at http://qkt.io/1UioDq.

Is technology destroying our humanness?

Published: 23 July 2018

The world is spinning with new technologies and we, the human inhabitants, are the willing prey! Cindy Glass, Director and Co-founder of Step Up Education Centres says “With ever-increasing time spent on smartphones, iPads and in front of live-streamed TV, we are in danger of losing our humanness. Teeny toddlers, vulnerable teens, exhausted parents and even bored grandparents can be seen, heads-down, shoulders bent and disengaged from the real world as they spend endless hours scrolling through their devices. Losing a smartphone is a big deal and people often feel a loss which is akin to losing a much-prized body part!”

Cindy highlights the following negative effects of too much screen time and says that they are serious enough for us, as parents, to STOP and take note!

  • It affects cognitive development in young children as it literally effects the way in which our children’s brains develop!
  • Too much screen time stifles creativity, imagination and playfulness which are essential to the wholesome development of children.• Concentration, critical thinking, memory and other learning skills are effected as children focus mindlessly on information (whether real or not) as it just pours effortlessly into their subconscious!
  • It affects mental and physical health as people become increasingly inactive and detached from the real world.
  • It will harm your relationship with your children. With parents and children spending too much time on their devices, they run the risk of losing the positive human connections that are key to happy relationships! Children feel unacknowledged, unheard and unnoticed and this leads to negative behaviours, anxiety, stress and depression.

Cindy goes on to explain “We cannot ignore the dangers of too much exposure to the non-real world that the internet offers. We cannot afford to lose the beauty of life because we did not take a stand against the media (in all its forms)!”  Consider the following tips in reducing the amount of screen time that you allow for yourself and your children:

  1. You have to set the example. Your children are more likely to do what you do, rather than what you say. You cannot expect your children to reduce their screen time if you do not do the same!
  2. Have dedicated no-go-zones for devices. Family activities, mealtimes and even when driving in a car can be cell phone free zones.
  3. Get outside! Plan activities that involve getting into nature- it is great for the soul and it will increase all the happy-hormones in your bodies!
  4. Encourage your children to get involved in activities beyond the school environment-sport, drama, music and art are great examples.
  5. Very young children need to play with their hands and bodies, not on a device.

Cindy closes by reiterating “Remember, as parents, we must set the example. REAL people, real love, real joy, real honesty and integrity cannot be experienced through the internet!”

Established in 2016, Step Up Education Centres is a dynamic after-school remediation and tutoring franchise with a difference. Step Up offers children an opportunity to succeed in a schooling system that is, at times, very unsympathetic.  From the moment, a child walks through a Step Up Education Centre door they feel different.  They no longer feel silly or stupid. They no longer feel misunderstood. They no longer feel judged. After just one lesson they feel hope. They see possibility. After a few sessions, they walk taller, feel smarter, do better. Why? Because Step Up believes that every child has potential… and our passionate educators will not give up until they reach it!

Six easy-to-implement ways of being an inspiration to your children

Published: 12 July 2018

To become inspired, we need to inspire others.

Remember that what we teach others, we teach ourselves. Imagine, then, the benefits of being an inspiration to your children!  It is a win-win in that what you give, you will receive!!  Cindy Glass, Director and Co-founder of Step Up Education Centres says “Parents tend to forget that they wish to be happy, joyful and inspired as much as they wish this for their children-and yet, who could be a greater source of inspiration to your children than you, the parent?”

Cindy goes on to explain “As a parent, you are your children’s first and longest-lasting teacher.  When you are inspired you will find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. You will want to become a source of inspiration for others - and most especially - for your children. Living from a place of inspiration will result in a life where there are no limitations to what you could achieve. Love, joy and peace will become the building blocks on which you create possibilities, meaning and purpose! You do not need any qualifications to become an inspiration to your children (or others). You need only be human, with a willingness to give to others the inspiration you wish for yourself!”

Inspired people

  • Stay detached from the negative opinions of others
  • Seek positive solutions to inevitable life-challenges
  • Are self-aware, self-motivated and are able to positively manage their emotions
  • Are more productive, enthusiastic and passionate
  • Seek ways to be of service to others-joyfully and without expectations of reward Inspire others

Cindy gives the following, easy-to-implement steps to inspire your child by being the inspiration

Inspiration through kindness. Random acts of kindness- a gentle word of encouragement, helping someone in need, a friendly greeting to the car guard, helping an animal-will inspire you and your children in ways you cannot imagine!

Inspiration through gratitude. Make it a daily habit to voice what you are grateful for. Take a look at your life—yes you have difficulties, hurts and challenges—but look deeper.  Teach your children the powerful gift of gratitude.  It will change your life!

Inspiration through generosity. Find ways to be generous. It does not have to be monetary. Giving of your love, joy, time and compassion are beautiful ways to inspire your children to do the same.

Inspiration through listening. Listen to understand, without having the need to interrupt or negatively impact the trust you want to build with your children. Inspire your children to listen, without judgement to others as you do with them.

Inspiration through being peaceful. Find ways to teach yourself to seek peace in your life. Yoga, meditation, exercise, reading uplifting books—whatever it takes.  There is no greater gift than peace!

Inspiration through passion. Being excited about life is infectious. Voice your excitement for positive progress in your children’s lives-no matter how small- and seek to find positive growth points in your own.

Cindy concludes by saying “You need to BE inspired to inspire others.  What you teach your children, you teach yourself.  It is a win-win for all!”

SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL BABY WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

The judge’s votes are in and the competition was fierce with over 40 000 entrants all vying for a chance at over R151 000 in prizes.

Earlier this month the Top 50 finalists were put out to public vote, and all votes have supported the Mater Domini pregnancy in crisis centre who have received R100 000 in donations comprising of basinets, bedding, toiletries and sanitarywear for moms and babies who have taken shelter at the home.

For Mater Domini, the support could not have come at a better time.  “Mater Domini is blessed to be the beneficiary of R100 000 in support from the My Most Beautiful Baby initiative. Through this, we have received invaluable exposure for our cause and our work supporting vulnerable women during crisis pregnancy and assisting them in caring and nurturing their newborn babies.” Were the appreciative words of Megan Taljaard, representative for the charity.

Competition Chief Marketing Officer, Monique Elliot added that ongoing support for the centre is of a huge concern. “Mater Domini is desperate for funding and at risk of closure in four months.  We are also assisting with repairs to their kitchen and an online shopping credit and cash to help with consumable expenses and we urge any member of the public who can assist them to reach out via their website www.materdomini.net.”

Upon receiving the gifts, the charity could hardly contain their gratitude, “This is an amazing and generous donation and our thanks and appreciation is unbounded.     Services such as ours cannot sustain itself without the assistance of initiatives such as My Most Beautiful Baby who have established innovative ways to look at a bigger and deeper understanding of the beauty of all babies, including the vulnerable.” continued Megan.

Thousands of parents entered their babies aged 0 – 36 months and have been eagerly awaiting today’s announcement of the winners.  Organisers, MMB Online are thrilled with the success of this year’s competition.  “It’s been incredibly well supported by mom’s and dad’s across South Africa and our main sponsor, Huggies – Nappy Pants and all our other sponsor’s with over tenfold the entries of the 2015 Baby contest.

Entries came in droves with over 650 000 users on the website in less than eight weeks and just under 50 000 fans added to our Facebook page!”  said Monique.

Surprise Lelope from Johannesburg’s son Duncan who is nine months old, won 1st prize and R100 000 in the competition with nine additional winners each taking their share of R51 000 in cash.

Little Duncan’s dad is beaming with pride as he says.  “Thank you very much to all those who voted for my baby to win the 1st prize of R100 000 in the My Most Beautiful Baby competition. I've learnt a lot throughout this voting experience, and I would like to thank all the competition judges and voting public who contributed 20 % and 80 % to the voting total respectively. “

For those wanting to find out if their adorable baby is among the winners, please visit http://mymostbeautiful.com/baby-2016/     or their Facebook page.

As a result of the tremendous success of the competition, MMB Online have been prompted to launch a new initiative, titled “mMb.gives” – a champion of charities who will be supported by the competition ventures.

Monique says they have already registered Mater Domini and 26 other initial charities as beneficiaries to whom they have found innovative ways of lending ongoing indefinite support.  “These numbers are expected to grow each month.”  added Monique
