RubiBlue puts Africa at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Published: 29 May 2018

RubiBlue, intelligent business solutions provider, believes that now is the time for bold growth and expansion into Africa.

The continent is poised on the cusp of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and has the potential to change markets, shift global perspective and translate the true value of technology. With one of the largest low-income growth rates globally, Africa is perfectly suited to the development of solutions that drive automation, lower costs and improve peri-urban exposure.

“Africa is very technology savvy, not only from a creation and invention point of view, but from the ability to take a collaboration of existing technology to encompass a deeper need or requirement,” says Chris Ogden, Managing Director, RubiBlue. “Africa is the start point – technology from here is going to rapidly streamline many things, from the rudimentary to the solution on a grand scale.” Many of the technologies and inventions that are poised to emerge from Africa are solving problems that the first world isn’t even aware of.

This granular level of innovation is what holds the key to unlocking Africa as the next Silicon Valley. Some of the biggest trends in this space include automation, data exchange, Internet of Things, cloud-based computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Growing connectivity and infrastructure is allowing for more and more of the continent to engage with technology and address challenges that have global significance.  “This is the key to unlocking growth, financial inclusion, economic empowerment and people in Africa, “concludes Ogden. “Real world solutions designed to better the local market and that have international impact. It is going to be a slow process – first we will crawl, then walk and then run. Africa is paying more attention to this revolution and the future is very bright indeed.”

Even Small Meeting Rooms Deserve Large-Scale Performance

Published: 24 May 2018

The mobile workforce is growing at a rapid rate, and its workers need technology that enable them to be more efficient at collaborating and communicating. Gavin Sear, Manager Global Product Marketing at Plantronics talks about the new Calisto 7200 in his recent blog:

"Today I have the pleasure of letting you all know that Plantronics has added to the Calisto family of speakerphones by introducing Calisto 7200 to the market. This new, sleek and compact speakerphone is designed specifically for small “huddle rooms” for up to six people, to provide a meeting experience beyond compare. With the addition of Calisto 7200, our partners can now offer their customers a complete selection of audio collaboration devices: headsets, personal and small group speakerphones.

We created this product in a collaboration that began last year with Polycom, a leader in the conferencing space, as we share a mutual goal of providing users with superior user experiences. There’s no doubt the need for small conference rooms is growing quickly. A Nemertes 2018 study found 67 percent of IT leaders are evaluating now, or planning this year or next year, to invest in meeting rooms. Even in today’s open-office environments, the need for smaller conference and collaboration rooms is increasing.

Calisto 7200 offers a professional audio experience on both ends of the call, powered by Polycom. Four highly-directional microphones pick up speech from every corner of the meeting room, with a great reduction of the “cave effect” of room reverberance. In addition, Calisto 7200 comes with wide band support for natural-sounding meetings with a small group of people. Noise cancelling technology filters out undesirable background noises like keyboard typing and paper shuffling when nobody in the room is actively speaking.

One of the best things about this speakerphone is that it can help increase adoption of unified communications (UC) systems. Because it’s so easy to use, with intuitive, plug-and-play connectivity for both PCs and mobile phones, it’s just flat-out simple to connect with UC applications. An additional side benefit is that businesses placing these in their huddle rooms don’t need to worry about post-installation availability. Calisto 7200 comes with a combined USB audio and security cable. However, without the locking cable, the device is portable, so you can take it on the road with you if you wish. To top it all off, there is software support for asset management via our Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering, Plantronics Manager Pro. With the subscription of Plantronics Manager Pro, IT can track these (and other) Plantronics audio and mobile devices to control inventory, update firmware, pre-configure and lock device settings remotely to ensure consistent audio across all devices.

Calisto 7200 connects easily via a USB cable, or you can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth. It has touch-sensitive controls to make it easy to manage calls and the Bluetooth memory can be cleared of previously paired devices which is essential for a shared audio device. And it’s affordable enough to install in all of your huddle rooms, small conference rooms and collaboration zones."

Designed for exceptional conferencing performance in a small group conference room, watch this page https://www.plantronics.com/za/en for more information about future availability in South Africa or speak to one of our local South African distributors.

Try it once and you’ll be hooked for life: Active Noise Cancelling

Published: 17 April 2018

What's all of this that we have been hearing about Active Noise Cancelling? It is not new, but more business owners are connecting the dots about the terminology that aligns to the technology already being used every single day in business centers across the globe. Below is excerpt from a simple, informative article written by one of our global directors, Frank Timmermans, and it certainly applies to technology readily available in the South African region.

"Silence sometimes feels like a warm bath. Spending time alone works wonders for your concentration, productivity and the quality of your conversations. But finding peace and quiet in the hectic environment of a busy open-plan office space seems to be extremely difficult because there’s always some form of background noise. Luckily many headset suppliers have found a solution for this: noise cancelling.

What is noise cancelling?

To start off: by noise we mean external sounds that don't come from the headset. Just think of buzzing appliances at the office, talking colleagues, traffic noise, ringing telephones and noises from incoming app messages and reminders for meetings. Noise cancelling technology is the method for reducing these undesired sounds. There are two forms: active and passive. Passive noise cancelling actually means nothing more than a good seal. You’re probably familiar with the malleable foam earplugs and hearing protection that road workers use. These are examples of passive noise cancelling. Headsets with this function work in the same way, they make sure that the ear is well sealed.

Active noise cancelling (ANC) on the other hand, is much more advanced. It works by adding sound to the sound coming from your headset. Contrary to what you might expect, this ends disturbing background noise.

How does it work?

Sound is vibrating air and it moves in waves. These waves of sound have an amplitude (which determines the volume) and a frequency (which determines the pitch). Think for example of the constant buzzing noise that comes from a plane engine which moves like the blue line.If you run precisely the opposite sound wave (anti-noise – the orange line) through an existing sound wave, you’re left with silence. This physical process is known as destructive interference. And this is exactly what headphones with ANC use. They are fitted with both a microphone that records ambient noise and the technology that ‘turns around’ these sound waves. These reversed waves are then added to the sound that comes out of the speakers in your headphones, and voilà: ambient noise disappears for the user.

Noise cancelling in the microphone

The ANC technology not only ensures that you can work in your own bubble of silence. The person you’re talking to can also take advantage of it, by implementing the technology in the microphone of a headset. For the best sound, several omni-directional microphones are built into our newest products. Each microphone calculates where the sound of your voice comes from and focuses on that point in space. In this way the headset can already ‘ignore’ a lot of irrelevant background noise. In addition, the headset also lays several digital filters over the sound: one algorithm detects non-stationary sound like speaking colleagues, and another algorithm checks whether there are stationary sounds like buzzing printers or the air-conditioning. All of this combined means that it feels just like you’re alone in the office, wherever you are!

Why is ANC so great in a headset?

Noise in the workplace is not only the biggest enemy of efficiency, it’s also really bad for your health. So it’s no surprise that headsets with noise cancelling functionalities are popular in the workplace. We now have four different ANC products in our portfolio. This is our way of contributing to the whole world’s productivity!" You can view a demonstration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpgOVTtn0eQ

Noise and managing it in the workplace is a popular topic which we will discuss across the South African region over the coming months. Including technology options within business strategies for helping workers have clear conversations is certainly something to consider, amongst other ideas for adapting to modern work styles. An African First - Ground-Breaking Research Survey Launched into Boards of Privately-Held Companies and Family Businesses.

Published: 10 April 2018

Remuneration and performance of boards of directors has been the subject of extensive conceptualisation and empirical research over many years. Internationally most of this research has dealt with European and American based companies. Alternatively, and particularly in Africa, it has focused on listed companies and public entities. “This has left a huge knowledge gap regarding non-listed African board practices, particularly relating to privately-held company and family business board fees” said Carl Bates founder and chief executive of Sirdar Group.

Sirdar Group, Africa’s leading educator, appointer and guide to high-performance boards of privately-held companies and family businesses has decided to fill that gap. “With the launch of this research project we are seeking to address this chasm in the research” Bates stated. “Specifically, we want to support the achievement of meaningful economic impact by companies across the continent through supporting their ability to have truly high-performance boards. This research is one aspect of enabling this to happen.” The research will provide high-level understanding for privately-held and family companies, shareholder-managers and non-executives directors on three subjects:

  • The fees payable to the non-executive and independent directors of privately-held and family companies across Africa.
  • The diversity of board structures of such African companies.
  • The perceived performance of these boards.

Launched on 10 April 2018 this survey-based research is aimed at collecting data from board members of privately-held and family businesses across Africa for analysis. Directors and companies wishing to participate in this exciting journey and obtain a complimentary copy of the report can do so by completing the survey on the following link: https://sirdargroupafricanboardsurvey.evalandgo.com/s/?id=JTk2bCU5M28lOUElQjA=&a=JTk1cCU5OGwlOTglQjE

Plantronics (NYSE: PLT) an audio pioneer and communications technology leader, today announced it has extended the management and reporting aspects of its cloud software solution, Plantronics Manager Pro v3.11, to include Plantronics unified communications (UC) headsets connected to mobile devices running iOS and Android. This extended reach is enabled through the Plantronics Hub mobile application. By deploying Plantronics Manager Pro v3.11 and Plantronics Hub, IT managers can now see, manage and gather valuable insights from the entire line of Plantronics enterprise communications devices that are on the desktop and attach to tablets and mobile phones.

“More than 53% of organizations have interest in ear-to-ear diagnostics that would enable IT leaders to manage voice performance from the user perspective, and more than 35% of companies are increasing deployment of mobile UC clients,” said Irwin Lazar, vice president and research director at Nemertes Research. “These realities make it more important than ever to ensure IT and line-of-business managers are equipped with solutions that can help them obtain analytics and actionable insights from across their company’s entire communications ecosystem."

Plantronics Manager Pro is Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) designed to manage Plantronics communications devices. With its easy-to-use tools, IT professionals and their managed-services partners are able to proactively manage the performance of every supported Plantronics headset across the enterprise, ensuring best user experience by accessing actionable insights. Plantronics Manager Pro is available through authorized resellers in most countries around the world.

  • The ability to see, manage and gain actionable insights from the complete line of supported Plantronics business communications devices, including all Plantronics UC headsets attached to Mac OS and Windows desktops as well Android and iOS mobile devices.

  • Northbound API access to the Plantronics Manager Pro dataset. This means it is easier than ever for customers, developers and partners to embed this data into pre-existing enterprise applications or create new service offerings.

  • Streamlined reports. Asset Management and Adoption now includes all the reports IT professionals need to successfully deploy and drive UC and soft phone adoption.

“For an IT professional to be able to gain valuable data from our full line of enterprise devices, even mobile ones attached to Plantronics UC headsets, is game-changing,” said Tom Wesselman, vice president and general manager, Software, Plantronics. “Now, IT can really have a complete view of all the information available to them, which will arm them with the knowledge to make much more informed decisions based on this data.”

About Plantronics Manager Pro

Modern communications and collaboration systems are built on open operating systems and soft phone platforms that are frequently updated. In order to deliver high-quality experiences, these updates often necessitate settings and firmware updates for associated devices. With hundreds and sometimes thousands of headsets to manage, keeping the headset estate up-to-date is a daunting task. But failing to do so leads to poor user experience and declines in adoption. Plantronics Manager Pro is a subscription SaaS that allows IT or a managed service provider to configure settings, update audio device software and firmware, analyze call quality and ensure policy compliance. The cloud-based architecture utilizes agent software on the device, Plantronics Hub, as a relay to the cloud tenant. The cloud tenant is accessed through a web browser and offers IT Managers and their partners a single interface through which to manage the headset installed base. Plantronics Manager Pro offers predictive reporting tools as part of three analysis suites, including:

-Asset Management and Adoption: To manage headset inventory, push firmware updates, plan and deploy UC and Collaboration (UCC) and drive UCC adoption

-Call Quality and Analytics: To improve conversation quality and troubleshoot issues

-Health and Safety: To ensure acoustic levels are within acceptable range and monitor compliance

Pricing and Availability: Plantronics Manager Pro is currently available in 143 countries, including South Africa, as an annual or three-year subscription service, from Plantronics Authorized Distributors. Managing Noise in the Modern Workplace

Published: 15 March 2018

In the era of communication and collaboration, noise reaches everywhere, including your bottom line.

In today’s open offices, noise is the biggest distraction to getting work done. Modern work spaces promote collaboration but in increasingly crowded spaces, the sounds created by hard surfaces and fewer walls can make it hard to focus. Plantronics brings immersive headsets along with an intelligent multisensory experience that uses natural sounds and complementary visuals to dynamically adapt to distracting speech and ever-changing noise to keep an office in tune.

Hero Solutions: Voyager 6200 UC, Voyager Focus UC, Blackwire 5200, Savi 700

For on-the-go workers, which we’re seeing more and more of, even in South Africa, noise in mobile environments makes it difficult for them, and their teammates back in the office, to hear, be heard and connect to what matters most. For this type of work style, Plantronics has solutions that easily connect to multiple devices and cancel out noise on both sides of the conversation.

Hero Solutions: Voyager 8200 UC, Voyager 5200 UC, Voyager 6200 UC

In contact centers, noise is a huge problem. With so many conversations happening at once, focus can sometimes falter, employee comfort can drop, and the security of sensitive customer information could potentially be compromised. Plantronics has purpose-built headsets designed for the Contact Center, but with hundreds – even thousands of headsets to manage, dealing with individual needs can be labor-intensive. Through SaaS, Plantronics delivers insights, simplifies headset adoption and lets IT respond to needs without interruption to the CX, all from one place.

Hero Solutions: Encore Pro 500/700, Manager Pro

Wherever work happens, noise stands in the way. With Plantronics’ portfolio of collaboration solutions it doesn’t have to. For more information or sales questions, contact one of our authorized local South African distributors which are listed on www.plantronics.com/za

Will Louis JR Tshakoane Prove Critics Wrong, Is Undercover Millionaires Legit?

Published: 09 March 2018

Louis JR Tshakoane, the founder and President of Undercover Millionaires Currency has come under a lot of pressure in 2017 from his competitors and investors. Beefing with FOREX trader Andile Mayisela in the Daily Sun to question marks being raise by some of his 25000+ odd investors of the UMC crypto-currency.This article is dedicated to looking deeper into his legitimacy as a South African entrepreneur. He came under fire when many viewers of VUZU TV saw his lavish lifestyle on national reality show Rich Kids at the end of 2016.

After the launch of his Crypto Currency during April 2016, business for him began to boom. With a massive following of 1,500,000+ media followers glued to his every Facebook and Instagram posts.Since Bitcoin has become a craze in South Africa many people have taken interest in the FOREX market with traders such as Jason Noah of FOREX KINGS and Jabulani "Cashflow" Ngcobo who are well known for hosting training sessions and seminars charging the public to learn how to trade. Other prolific traders who have also come under immense pressure over recent years include Prince NRB, Ref Wayne who also founded his own Crypto-Currency called Pipcoin in early 2016 that is no longer functioning or tradable. Sandile Shezi the self proclaimed Millionaire and founder of Global Forex Institute has also taken jabs at other forex traders with much less ethical ways of doing so in the fear of competition as seen on his many Instagram feuds with Ashley Hastibeer of GoForex. Sandile Mantsoe, Trillion Dollar Legacy Binary Options Forex Trader who infamously killed his Girlfriend is now facing life in prison and has given the trading circles a bad reputation for the fast life.

Louis-Jr Tshakoane travelled around the world from South Africa to Dubai and London preaching the gospel that his UMC crypto-currency can make them Millionaires. Many of whom his followers are so on paper. Since the currency price is based on supply and demand. Withdrawals have slowed down once he began touring the world. Non the less that has not stopped his string of ground breaking announcements that he claims will prove to many critics that his 100% legit and above board. During some seminars I attended in 2017 he even showed audited financial statements of the company boosting in the millions all paying taxes. He has announced a game changing idea around UMC which he calls Undercover Millionaires Cellphone Network (UMCN). An official Mobile Virtual Network (MVNO) which is competing against the likes of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Mobile and Smartcall. Images and flyers are fast spreading on the streets and social media pages of a new sim card powered by his crypto-currency offering 40% more value for all airtime and data purchases. Meaning when one buys R100 of data they get a bonus R40 of airtime totalling R140. And when a customer or UMC member buys data of 1GB they get up to 500 Mb free. Louis Jr Tshakoane claims his holding company Undercover Billionaires has a strong partnership with Cell C providing him with this superior advantage over the rumors spreading around. The sim cards will provide a much needed sustainable financial upgrade for his currency as members also earn crypto whenever they call. His subscribers have to select a monthly package of airtime and data starting at R150 per month in order to keep their crypto accounts live.

He has been named many things including a fraud, con man, scammer and much more by a handful of disgruntled investors who claim he ran away with their money. All of which he says are people who lack patience and understanding of what they invested in. "I always tell people in my seminars that today's people especially South African's suffer from RDS "Research Deficiency Syndrome". People tend to run after get rich quick schemes like MMM and Kipi thinking they will become millionaires by earning perpetual monthly returns of up to 75% per month like on platforms such as MYLIFECHANGE24/7 which seized to pay its thousands of investors after only 3 months of operating its faceless brand. I put my face and my fathers name on my brand because we 100% legit. I know many of my members expected things to be matured by now but thats not how the game works. In FOREX or CryptoCurrency to avoid risk you need to exercise patience. It has been a challenging 2 years trying to build momentum for UMC. We saw it explode in popularity amongst both the elders and youth then it slowly declined in demand because of insecure individuals and competitors spreading false information and fake accounts using my pictures, labelling me and the currency. It is high time in 2018 that people will realize my original vision. We were waiting for our mobile license to be approved and that took longer than expected.

Our crypto currency UMC is backed by bitcoin, gold, silver bullion and our airtime and data business model. We are 1000% sure that through the 40% discount on all mobile services we will have the cutting edge over the critics, actions speak louder than words.Louis Jr Tshakoane managed to win the hearts of the people around the world with his inspiring story of how he wrote a letter to his mentor Sir Richard Branson when he was 16. Telling people that he loved the letter so much that he physically came to South Africa to donate Virgin Active gym equipment valued at more than R2,5million. He then worked for companies such as Lamborghini Johannesburg and UBS Swiss where he learned from millionaires about the international financial markets. My verdict on this issue is still up for debate kindly leave your comments below on what you think will happen next on this young man's entrepreneurial journey of creating Africa's first "viable" digital crypto-currency.

Plantronics Tech Tip - Active and Passive Noise Canceling

Published: 19 February 2018

WHY DO YOU NEED GOOD PASSIVE HEADSET DESIGN COMBINED WITH ACTIVE NOISE CANCELING (ANC) TO ACHIEVE OPTIMAL NOISE CANCELING PERFORMANCE?

Passive Noise Reduction
Any stereo headset or headphone will provide some level of passive noise reduction. In fact, any device that provides a physical barrier to your ear canal will limit your exposure to noise. Industrial noise canceling headphones fit over the ear and are specially constructed to maximize noise filtering. They are packed with layers of high-density foam or other sound-absorbing material, which makes them heavier than other headphones but reduces the background noise by about 15 to 20 dB. This level of noise reduction is essential in workplaces with extreme noise levels, such as airport ground crew areas or factories. Not every work environment requires that level of noise canceling, however. For office workers, a more lightweight, over-the-ear or in-the-ear headset typically provides the required passive noise reduction more comfortably.

Active Noise Canceling (ANC)
Beyond passive noise canceling, which involves physically blocking sound, ANC is a technology built into many of our products that further enhances the user experience. This technology uses additional microphones on the back of each speaker that respond well to low-frequency (80 to 700 Hz) background noise.
These microphones pick up the background noise, feed it into the ANC circuitry, invert it, then direct it into the same audio path. This happens very quickly, <500 milliseconds, which is not perceptible to the user.
The result? The original background noise and the inverted noise cancel each other, leaving just the audio the user wants to hear.

WHY ARE THERE TWO LEVELS OF ANC ON VOYAGER 8200 UC (MID AND HIGH)?
The Voyager 8200 UC features two levels of ANC. The first one, “mid,” is set at a similar level to the Voyager Focus UC, optimized for typical office noise. The second level “high,” is about double the intensity of the mid level. The high-level ANC is very useful for noisier environments, such as airports or coffee shops, but may be fatiguing for long periods of use in an office environment depending on how sensitive the user is to the effects of ANC. The option to adjust ANC intensity settings allows users to choose their own individual comfort level.

Wherever you work, noise can be distracting. So whether you’re in an open office or on a crowded flight, taking calls or listening to music, the boomless Voyager 8200 UC Bluetooth® headset with active noise canceling lets you focus on what’s important, in comfort and style. Hear music and conversations with complete clarity. All tones, from high to low and everything in between, sound full and natural. Need to tune out distractions? The hi-fi stereo sound and dual-mode active noise canceling cut background noise while the dual-paired microphones keep the focus on your voice.
