In a country where one in five children suffers from stunted growth due to malnutrition, the Alfeco Foundation is taking bold steps to fight hunger and unlock the potential of South Africa’s youth.
The Alfeco Foundation is the social impact arm of the Alfeco Group – a South African industrial group backed by Indian investors who are deeply committed to uplifting local communities and driving inclusive development.
Through its Breakfast Feeding Programme, the Foundation currently provides nutritious daily meals to 10,260 learners across 10 schools in Gauteng, North West, and the Western Cape - many of them in under-served rural communities. In 2023 alone, the initiative served over 1.5 million meals, helping children stay in school, focus in class, and build a healthier foundation for the future.
“We don’t just see food on plates – we see happier learners, stronger learners and more capable future contributors to our South African community,” says Suhani Ahuja , Ambassador at the Alfeco Foundation.
She adds: “By addressing hunger, we’re addressing inequality, education barriers, and long-term economic inclusion.”
The programme forms part of the Foundation’s broader vision: creating sustainable food security in vulnerable communities. From supporting rural schools to training local food preparers and sourcing from regional suppliers, the initiative is designed to deliver lasting impact - beyond handouts.
The Foundation currently distributes meals across schools in a number of communities including Rustenburg, Kathlehong, Germiston, Tembisa and Kleinmond in the Western Cape.
Ché O’Connor, Alfeco Foundation Programme Director says: “Since the programme began, our learners arrive on time, stay alert throughout the day, and participate more actively. This daily meal is making a real difference - for many, it’s the only nutritious food they receive.”
Ambitious goals for 2025 and beyond
Looking ahead, the Foundation plans to more than double its reach to 50,000 learners nationwide by 2026, with a continued focus on innovation, community partnerships, and long-term sustainability.
“Our mission is to do the impossible simply,” says Ahuja concluding: “We’re calling on partners across business, government, and civil society to join us in building a hunger-free, opportunity-rich South Africa.”
