Buckle up for the biggest festive gift

With the December festive season fast approaching, the QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) calls on motorists and passengers to make a life-saving choice: Buckle Up.
Road crashes are a leading cause of spinal cord injuries. Wearing a seatbelt can help prevent serious injury in the event of a crash, and keep drivers from becoming QASA members.
“We don’t want new members,” the organisation says. “A spinal cord injury comes at a great personal and financial cost. We’d like to prevent these kinds of injuries where possible.”
This starts will raising awareness among motorists and encouraging them to take the pledge to not drive distracted, under the influence or without a seatbelt. Passengers are also encouraged to strap in.
“People often underestimate the risk of not wearing a seatbelt when in reality, it is crucial to your safety,” QASA says. “Even if you consider yourself a safe driver, you can’t prevent other drivers or circumstances from causing an accident.”
“A seatbelt is a little bit of insurance to make sure that when an accident occurs, you have the best possible chance of walking away.”
“Your health, safety and wellbeing are the best gifts that you can give your loved ones. Keep yourself and your passengers safe by having everyone Buckle Up when on the road – even on short trips that you’ve driven often,” the organisation continues.
Accidents close to home are very common as drivers become overly confident or distracted. QASA further urges drivers to not text and drive: “It can be very tempting to quickly check or respond to a message while driving. But that small choice can leave your with the life-long battle of being a wheelchair user in a world not build to accommodate you.”
On December 5 and 6, QASA will be deploying members to key service stations on South Africa national roads to meet with motorists, share their personal stories and urge drivers to take the pledge committing to always buckling up. Drivers who sign the pledge will receive a free branded licence disc sticker as a reminder of their commitment to road safety.
The organisation will be at the Engen Winelands 1 Stop North (heading towards Paarl) in the Western Cape, the Shell on the corner of Paul Kruger and Van Rensburg Street in Mayville and the Sasol on the N12 South, Moroka Bypass, Protea Industrial Park.
“If you are in the area, we urge you to stop at the stations, sign our pledge and buckle up. A crash can happen in a moment. And a small action can make a big difference in preventing serious injury,” QASA concludes.
