Netflix Launches ‘The Polygamist,' A Bold 22-Episode Supernovel Adaptation Of Sue Nyathi's Bestselling Novel

Netflix has officially launched its highly anticipated local drama series, The Polygamist, a gripping 22-episode "supernovela" that has instantly captured the attention of audiences across the continent. Premiering globally on June 12, 2026, the series is adapted from the acclaimed bestselling debut novel by renowned author Sue Nyathi and produced by the multi-award-winning Stained Glass Productions (Uzalo, The Wife).
While the original novel was set in Zimbabwe, this television adaptation reimagines the high-stakes narrative within the opulent suburbs of Johannesburg, bringing a distinctly South African flavor to a universal story of power, betrayal, and emotional survival.
The Clashing of Chaos and Order
The Polygamist centers on Jonasi Gomora (played by S’dumo Mtshali), a wealthy, self-made banking magnate and construction tycoon who rose from poverty in Soweto to conquer the corporate world. To the public, Jonasi lives a flawless, aspirational life. He is a respected CEO, a loving father, and the husband to a glamorous social media darling and matriarch, Joyce Gomora (played by Gugu Gumede).
However, behind closed doors, Jonasi’s curated world is built on a toxic foundation of lies, secret wives, and mistresses. When his reckless double life violently unravels—climaxing when he impregnates a ruthless younger mistress, Matipa, with twins—Joyce is forced to make a harrowing emotional compromise. In a desperate bid to preserve her status, her family, and the public image she spent years building, she seemingly "consents" to Jonasi taking a second wife.
What unfolds is not a traditional, culturally sanctified polygamous arrangement, but a masterful exploration of the devastating fallout of infidelity, emotional manipulation, and female resilience under extreme duress.
Key Creative and Production Highlights
A Star-Studded Ensemble Cast: Led by the magnetic chemistry of S'dumo Mtshali and Gugu Gumede, the series features a powerhouse line-up of South African talent, including Kwanele Mthethwa as the ambitious Matipa, Celeste Ntuli as the emotionally grounded Essie, Kenneth Nkosi as Jonasi's loyal but used fixer Magesh, alongside veteran actress S'thandiwe Kgoroge, Luyanda Zwane, and Vuyo Biyela.
Visionary Directing & Writing: The series is brought to life by a stellar directing trio—Akin Omotoso, Rolie Nikiwe, and Nthabi Tau—with Busisiwe Zwane steering the ship as head writer.
The Telenovela Reimagined: Embracing a robust 22-episode structure, the series blends the fast-paced, highly addictive hooks of a classic soap opera with the cinematic visual storytelling and deep character development expected of a premium streaming production.
From the Cast and Crew
"I first read the book and then the scripts started coming in; I couldn't put it down. Jonasi is so layered—he is searching for something, and while his choices are destructive, he's not a simple villain. He is definitely lost. Exploring those layers of ego and public perfection with everything happening in our society right now got me incredibly excited as an artist."
— S'dumo Mtshali (Jonasi Gomora)
"The true emotional heart of this series belongs to the women who have to survive the choices Jonasi makes. Joyce represents order, stability, and the performance of a perfect life, while Jonasi embodies pure chaos and entitlement. Watching those two forces collide is what makes this show impossible to look away from."
