Enjoy May Movie Madness with Ster-Kinekor’s ‘Throwback Cinema’

As the weather turns cooler, the big screen is hotting up with the return of some real classic titles that have certainly stood the test of time and are therefore all worthy of another viewing. And, with the ticket price at just R50, Throwback Cinema should be a weekly event in your diary!
First up, from 02 May, is The Patriot; the 2006 adventure Night at the Museum releases on 09 May; the legal drama Philadelphia featuring Bruce Springsteen’s haunting Streets of Philadelphia soundtrack is on the big screen from 16 May, followed by the release of the 1991 iconic movie Thelma & Louise from 23 May. The 40th anniversary of the coming-of-age teen drama, The Breakfast Club, is celebrated on the big screen with its release on 30 May.
“Our Throwback Cinema titles are proving to be a very popular option to watch some classics on the big screen again. The May line-up includes some really special films featuring some really big stars, to enjoy either as repeat viewing or for a first-time cinema experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.
Leading the May charge is the 2000 period drama, The Patriot, which releases on 02 May. Peaceful farmer Benjamin Martin is driven to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a sadistic British officer murders his son. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film stars Mel Gibson in the title role, with his son Gabriel played by the late Heath Ledger, and Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs and Lisa Brenner.

Next on the May line-up is the 2006 adventure Night at the Museum, which releases on 09 May. This adventure fantasy film, directed by Shawn Levy, stars Ben Stiller, Ricky Gervais, Carla Gugino, and the late Robin Williams. A newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc.

From 16 May, the legal drama Philadelphia, featuring Bruce Springsteen’s haunting Streets of Philadelphia soundtrack, lights up the big screen. First released in 1993, and the winner of two Oscars, the film stars Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Roberta Maxwell, and is directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs). When a man with HIV is fired by his law firm because of his condition, he hires a homophobic small-time lawyer as the only willing advocate for a wrongful dismissal suit.

If you haven’t seen the iconic Thelma and Louise on the big screen, make sure you get to a Ster-Kinekor cinema near you on 23 May. Starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, this classic road trip adventure drama, first released in 1991, tells the story of two best friends who set out on an adventure. However, it soon turns around into a terrifying escape from being hunted by the police, as the two women escape for the crimes they committed. The film is directed by Ridley Scott and also stars Harvey Keitel, Brad Pitt and Michael Madsen.

Rounding up the May Throwback Cinema movie line-up is the screening of the coming-of-age teen drama, The Breakfast Club, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Five high school students meet in Saturday detention and discover how they have a great deal more in common than they thought. Releasing on 30 May, the film, directed by John Hughes, played a role in launching the careers of some of its young stars, including Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall.
They only met once, but it changed their lives forever.

As mid-winter draws nearer, watching a movie in the warmth of the cinema is the perfect way to spend a few hours. And, June’s big screen line-up is sure to keep you entertained, starting with the 1961 classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, from 06 June. Next up is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, which releases on 13, followed by the classic 1960 Hitchcock thriller, Psycho on 20 June. The month ends on a lighter note with the antics of Shrek and Fiona in Shrek II releasing on 27 June, while at Rosebank Nouveau, film lovers can enjoy love in a different era with the screening of Pride and Prejudice, based on the novel by Jane Austen, from 27 June.
Throwback Cinema titles are screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Sandton, Mall of Africa, Eastgate, Cresta and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Vaal in Vanderbijlpark; Mooirivier in Potchefstroom; Shelly Beach in KZN; Baywest in Gqeberha; Somerset Mall in Somerset West; and Blue Route, Cavendish, V&A Waterfront, Capegate and Tygervalley in Cape Town, giving audiences an even wider opportunity to enjoy the great line-up of classic films.
