Ster-Kinekor launches R50 October Throwback Cinema line-up featuring Angry Birds, Marie Antoinette, Splash

Ster-Kinekor is bringing back more cinematic nostalgia to the silver screen this October with a handpicked selection of fan-favourite classics and family blockbusters. For only R50 a ticket, the new Throwback Cinema line-up offers movie lovers an invitation to relive some favourite movie moments or experience these iconic films for the first time as the filmmakers intended – on the big screen.

The October titles feature a vibrant mix of family comedy, lavish period drama, and romantic fantasy, offering something for everyone.

The October Throwback Cinema line-up

The Angry Birds Movie, releasing on Friday 02 October for two weeks, provides the perfect movie break as the short October school holiday comes to an end. This animated comedy brings the globally adored gaming phenomenon about an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely – to vibrant life. In this paradise, Red, a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck, and the volatile Bomb have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to. Directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, this animated classic features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage, among others.

Next up is the lavish, historical drama from 2006, Marie Antoinette. Screening from Friday 16 October for two weeks, this classic film provides a sumptuously stylised and pastel-hued look into the isolated, extravagant life of France’s iconic but ill-fated young queen. From her early betrothal to Louis XVI at fifteen to her reign as queen at nineteen and ultimately to the eventual fall of Versailles, the film blends historical drama with a modern, iconic soundtrack. With direction from Sofia Coppola, the film features an A-list of actors including Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Tom Hardy, Rip Torn, and Rose Byrne.

From Friday 30 October, screening for two weeks, movie lovers are invited to dive into a beloved 1980s classic that blends romance, fantasy, and comedy. Splash follows the story of a hardworking New Yorker who falls head-over-heels in love with a mysterious woman, A successful businessman falls in love with the girl of his dreams. There's one big complication though: he's fallen hook, line and sinker for a mermaid who rescued him from drowning as a child. Directed by Ron Howard, the film stars Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, John Candy, and Eugene Levy.

EXCLUSIVELY AT ROSEBANK NOUVEAU (JOHANNESBURG)

With the release of the 1973 classic, The Way We Were screening from Friday 02 October for two weeks, Johannesburg audiences can look forward to an exclusive engagement with one of the greatest romantic dramas of all time, starring two of the most celebrated stars of all time. Set during the turbulent post-WWII McCarthy era, the film follows a deeply political Marxist woman and a carefree writer who find that their intense physical attraction and genuine friendship face a devastating trial against their opposing societal beliefs. The film is directed by the legendary Sydney Pollack and stars the iconic Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford in the lead roles, with the title’s theme song sung by Streisand.
