The @ Collection’s flagship Sandton property celebrates its fourth anniversary, reflecting on how it changed the face of hotel living in Johannesburg
JOHANNESBURG - Four years ago, @Sandton Hotel opened its doors as something South Africa had not seen before: a 562-room luxury hotel embedded within the country’s first multi-use, high-rise lifestyle development. This March, the hotel marked that milestone by looking back on what has been built and forward to what comes next.
Situated in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg’s financial and business hub, @Sandton Hotel was conceived not merely as a place to stay, but as a self-contained address. Alongside the hotel’s 562 rooms sit 480 upmarket leased apartments, a full-service spa and Pilates studio, a deli, crèche and co-working space, a combination that set a new benchmark for integrated urban living when it launched in March 2022.
A Lifestyle Experience
The hotel’s accommodation offering remains one of its most distinctive features. Rooms are significantly more spacious than the conventional hotel standard, designed closer to studio apartments, complete with bar fridges, microwaves, washer/dryers, Nespresso machines, induction plates and dedicated lounge areas.
Two private pool decks, a private cinema, a fully equipped gym and the Clubhouse (which includes a children’s play area) complete a guest experience designed equally for short stays and extended living.
For those seeking the pinnacle of the property’s offering, the three-bedroom East Penthouse, the multi-level three-bedroom West Penthouse and the two-bedroom Presidential Suite represent a tier of luxury distinct even within the hotel’s broader portfolio. Both penthouses feature spacious private balconies with panoramic views across the Johannesburg skyline, sophisticated lounge areas and fully equipped kitchens with Smeg and Miele appliances. The West Penthouse includes its own private plunge pool.
Whether hosting an intimate gathering, a corporate occasion or simply marking a milestone, these spaces offer a genuinely private, high-end alternative to conventional hotel luxury.
A Culinary Offering That Keeps Guests Coming Back
Under the direction of Executive Chef Yoshan Naidu, @Sandton Hotel’s restaurant has become a destination in its own right, built on the principle that menus should move with the seasons and with the imagination of the team behind them. The result is a dining programme that rewards both first-time visitors and returning guests with something new to discover.
Weekend mornings have developed a loyal following thanks to a Saturday and Sunday breakfast that includes a glass of MCC and oysters. A monthly spitbraai draws guests and locals alike, and mid-month brunches round out a social calendar that reflects the hotel’s broader ambition: to be a genuine part of the Sandton community, not simply a place to sleep.
A Base For Business In The Heart Of Sandton
For business travellers, the property’s location is as valuable as its facilities. Situated on Benmore Road, steps from the Gautrain station and at the centre of Sandton's corporate district, @Sandton Hotel has become a preferred base for executives visiting Johannesburg.
Its conference centre, an 81-seater auditorium and the CoWorx co-working space collectively serve the full spectrum of professional requirements, from large-scale events to focused working sessions.
Four Years On
Anthony Batistich, General Manager of @Sandton Hotel since its opening, says the past four years have confirmed what the development set out to prove.
“When we opened in March 2022, the goal was for people to think about hotel stays differently, not as a room for the night, but as a proper living experience in the middle of one of Africa’s most dynamic cities. Four years on, the guests who have walked through our doors, the team we have built and the community we have become part of tell us that proposition has genuinely landed. We are proud of everything this property has grown into, and there is still plenty more to come.”
