Angostura Bar & Beverage Awards SA 2023 announces shortlisted finalists

The ANGOSTURA® Bar & Beverage Awards South Africa is thrilled to announce the finalists for both the nominated ‘Bar’ and ‘Beverage’ submissions categories in the highly anticipated 2023 awards, setting the stage for an inaugural South African celebration of excellence. With one round of nominations and two rounds of rigorous judging, the selected finalists represent the top contenders in their respective categories, showcasing the exceptional talent and innovation within the South African bar industry.

2023 marks the launch of the prestigious ANGOSTURA® Bar & Beverage Awards South Africa, an event that aims to celebrate the local industry, which continues to gain recognition on the global stage as a primary market in the cocktail and beverage space. From the master mixologists and top-notch cocktail bars to the invaluable supporting players who drive service excellence, the awards will honour the outstanding contributions made to the sector.

Best Restaurant Bar: Athletic Club & Social, Asoka, Marble, Zioux

Best Bartender: Alecs Powrie (Art of Duplicity), Charné van Heerden (The House of Machines), Josh "JJ" Hendricks (Fable), Julian Short (Sin + Tax)

Best Bar Team: Fable, Sin + Tax, The Drinkery, The House of Machines

Best Support Staffer: Alex Duru (The House of Machines), Aphiwe Simane (The House of Machines), Claude Mweemba (Smoking Kills), David Munro  (Art of Duplicity)

Best Bar Solutions: A Popular Bunch, Just Short, Sip Exclusive, Thirst Bar Services

Best Upliftment Programme or Initiative: Bar Unity, Shake Your Future, Sisterhood For Industry Support (SIS), The Hand Up Mentorship Programme (THUMP)

Best Brand Ambassador: Bradley Jacobs (Diageo), Caitlin Hill (Rémy Cointreau), Roxanne Rock (Bacardi), Tanealé van der Merwe (Pernod Ricard)

Best Bar Communicator: Cassandra Eichhoff, Julian Short, Leah van Deventer, Steve Steinfeld

Best Mentor: Cassandra Eichhoff, Gareth Wainwright, Kurt Schlechter, Leah van Deventer

The ultimate winners from each category will be unveiled at the Awards Gala Ceremony, along with the finalists and winner in the category of Industry Icon.

In addition, finalists and the overall winners in the all-new ‘Beverage’ submissions categories will also only be announced at the event. Open to brands, distributors, and marketing agencies, each ‘Beverage’ submissions category recognises the best in their respective fields and highlights the innovation, creativity and showmanship that the South African beverage industry is known for. The categories are: Best New Local Cocktail Ingredient, Best New Local Spirit, Best New Local Liqueur or Spirit Aperitif, Best Brand Campaign, Best CSI Campaign, Best Brand Manager and Best Sales Representative.
