Calitzdorp Art Festival 2026 Showcases the Transformative Power of Karoo Creativity

Theme: Karoo Alchemy

This April, Calitzdorp will once again become a meeting place for creativity, community and the quiet magic of the Klein Karoo. From 24 April to 3 May 2026, the town will host the Calitzdorp Art Festival, a ten-day celebration shaped by a dedicated organising team of Tanya Sturgeon, Sean Brand, Sharlene Naidoo and Anique Pinkhard, who have poured their energy into creating an event that reflects the spirit of the region.

For Tanya Sturgeon, the environment itself becomes a catalyst: “There is a grittiness to Calitzdorp that encourages creativity. There is a distillation of things down to their essence which gives them an intensity and purity.”

The festival’s home base will be Bread & Co, the much-loved coffee shop and wine warehouse that will be transformed into a vibrant exhibition space. Additional venues across Calitzdorp and the Groenfontein Valley will open their doors, creating a trail of art, conversation and discovery throughout the town.

At the heart of this year’s festival is the theme Karoo Alchemy, the idea that something ordinary can be transformed into something extraordinary through imagination, craft and care. This theme is reflected not only in the artworks on display, but in the landscape itself.

As photographer Sean Brand describes it, “There is a magnetism in the Karoo, particularly Calitzdorp. The light, which is vital to me as a photographer, reflects the ancient history of the place.”

Art That Embodies Karoo Alchemy

This year’s exhibition brings together works that reveal how deeply the land shapes the artists who live here. Visitors will encounter Christian Buchner’s ceramic plates, whose textured surfaces and earthy glazes echo the geology of the valley. They will see Sean Brand’s photography of Karoo birds, a portrait of the wild, unmanicured life that thrives in the region. And they will pause at a watercolour by Johan Brink, a reminder of the unexpected bursts of colour that emerge from the dry landscape.

These pieces sit alongside paintings, sculptures, mixed-media works and photographic studies by artists who call Calitzdorp home. Each one offers its own interpretation of how the Karoo transforms the creative process.

As organiser Anique Pinkhard notes, “This land is not farmed and there is unadulterated natural life everywhere you look.”

A Festival Shaped By Community

Calitzdorp has long been home to a thriving community of artists, and the festival offers visitors the rare chance to meet them in their exhibition spaces, hear the stories behind their work and experience the intimacy of a town where creativity is woven into daily life.

Organiser Sharlene Naidoo reflects on this spirit of connection: “There is a resilient diversity in the Karoo that allows for acceptance and personal growth.”

How The Programme Brings The Theme To Life

The festival unfolds as a series of experiences that reveal how transformation, the essence of alchemy, takes shape in Calitzdorp. Throughout the ten days, visitors will move between hands-on workshops where everyday materials become artworks, intimate artist talks that open windows into creative process and studio visits that reveal the quiet rituals behind each piece.

The programme is anchored by artists whose work is deeply rooted in the region. Sandy Chaitowitz will guide participants through landscape and acrylic painting sessions, showing how the Karoo’s shifting light can be translated into colour and form. In the Groenfontein Valley, visitors will step into the studio of renowned ceramicist Clementina van der Walt, where clay becomes vessel and earth becomes art. Ceramic artist John Wilhelm will offer a hands-on workshop that introduces participants to his distinctive approach to sculptural form.

The rhythm of the festival is carried by shared meals and moments of performance. Stoep-lunch conversations and curated dinners create opportunities for connection. The resonant sound of the church organ, played by Andre Kleingeld, fills the historic space with a sense of reverence. And on 1 May, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in the Calitzdorp church, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Klein Karoo.

Evenings unfold under the open sky, none more beloved than the Dinner Under the Vines at De Krans, where the landscape becomes part of the celebration.

Nurturing The Next Generation

The festival also extends its spirit of transformation to young people. Three local schools will take part in a special art competition inspired by the birdlife of the region. Sean Brand will introduce learners to the birds he captures through his lens, and the children will create their own mixed-media artworks in response.

The top 21 pupils will join Sharlene Naidoo for a dedicated workshop, each receiving their own set of art materials to continue creating long after the festival ends. The team hopes to keep these workshops running throughout the year, nurturing young talent and building a sustainable creative culture in Calitzdorp.

A Place That Shapes The Art

Calitzdorp itself is part of the story. It is a place of big skies, warm people and a landscape that invites reflection and creativity. The festival is an invitation to experience this alchemy firsthand: how the land shapes the art, how the art shapes the community and how the community, in turn, shapes the festival.

The Calitzdorp Art Festival is more than an event. It is an invitation to witness how creativity transforms a town, how community shapes art and how the Karoo continues to inspire those who call it home.
