International Tango Masters Bring a Week of World-Class Dance to Johannesburg This May

Johannesburg, South Africa — May 2026 - Johannesburg’s cultural calendar is set to ignite this May with a rare and inspiring event as international tango maestros Rui Barroso of Portugal and Magdalena Gutiérrez of Argentina, the 2017 Tango World Champion, arrive in the city from 4–10 May 2026 for a week of workshops, performances, and social dancing.
A Landmark Tango Event in Johannesburg
Hosted by Milonga Milonguita and co-sponsored by the Embassy of Argentina, this event marks one of the most significant tango gatherings Johannesburg has seen in recent years.
It is a vibrant celebration of music, movement, and human connection that welcomes both seasoned dancers and complete beginners.
Rui Barroso brings nearly three decades of global teaching experience, while Magdalena Gutiérrez is internationally recognised for her artistry, musicality, and influence on tango education across more than 40 countries.
Their visit places Johannesburg firmly on the international tango map and offers a rare opportunity for cultural exchange, artistic enrichment, and community upliftment.
Beginner Series Programme
The week-long programme begins with a four-day Beginner Series from 4–7 May, led by Rui Barroso.
This programme is designed for individuals who have always wanted to learn tango but have not known where to begin.
No partner or prior experience is required, and participants of all ages are welcome.
Over the course of the series, attendees will explore rhythm, connection, the tango embrace, and the foundations of improvisation, building confidence step by step.
This series serves as an ideal introduction and preparation for the weekend’s main events.
Tango Weekend Experience
The Tango Weekend, taking place from 8–10 May at the Jabula Recreation Centre in Sandringham, offers a full immersion into the world of Argentine tango.
The weekend programme includes workshops catering to beginner, intermediate, and advanced dancers, as well as three social dances, known as milongas.
A special performance by Rui Barroso and Magdalena Gutiérrez will be a highlight of the event, alongside a tango music conference accompanied by wine.
The atmosphere will be further enriched by DJ sets from Rui Barroso and Johan Steyn.
Altogether, the weekend blends artistry, learning, and community, showcasing tango’s warmth and its power to bring people together.
