Hytera TETRA and broadband radios support public safety communications during the G20 Leaders Summit
Written by: Hytera Save to InstapaperJohannesburg, South Africa, 27 November 2025 — As South Africa hosted its first G20 Leaders’ Summit, much of the global attention focused on diplomacy, security layers, and the country’s ability to manage the pressures of a high-stakes international event. Less visible, but equally critical, was the communication infrastructure that kept frontline officers connected while tens of thousands of delegates, observers, and visitors moved across Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Although the national government oversaw all official summit communications, public safety agencies on the ground, from metropolitan police departments to emergency medical teams, depended heavily on their day-to-day radio networks to maintain operational continuity. Many of those teams relied on Hytera-built TETRA and broadband radios already deployed across municipal and emergency units.
With major transport hubs, protest-risk areas, and motorcade routes operating at peak strain, uninterrupted voice and data communication proved crucial. Officers used the radios to coordinate traffic diversions, manage medical callouts, and maintain visibility in crowded public spaces where response times typically shrink during large events.
Security analysts say the G20’s scale is unlike any other gathering South Africa has hosted in recent years, placing unprecedented pressure on frontline agencies that must balance routine duties with summit-related demands. The reliability of their existing communication systems allowed them to operate without the added risk of technical failures.
“High-profile events place significant demands on frontline operations, and dependable communication is fundamental to effective coordination,” said Mark Zheng, Managing Director of Hytera Southern Africa. “We are honoured that our technologies continue to play a role in supporting the day-to-day work of public safety agencies across South Africa.”
Hytera’s presence in South Africa spans more than 15 years, with its radios used by municipal law enforcement, EMS crews, and specialised conservation and anti-poaching units. That widespread adoption has made the system part of the country’s everyday safety fabric, a fact underscored during the G20, where even routine operations came under unusual strain.
While the event itself passed without major incident, experts note that the summit served as a practical stress test for the country’s emergency communication network. The performance of frontline teams, supported by their trusted radio platforms, offered a glimpse of how South Africa’s public safety infrastructure responds under global scrutiny.
As the country reflects on the logistical and operational lessons of hosting world leaders, emergency communication often overlooked, rarely celebrated, has emerged as one of the quiet essentials that enabled the summit to unfold smoothly.
