Reliability in Motion - Why Rotary Equipment Deserves More Attention

Every tonne processed, moved or compressed depends on rotating equipment performing as intended. Yet while mobile fleets often dominate maintenance discussions, some of the greatest reliability risks on a mine are found in the gearboxes, compressors, bearings and drive systems operating behind the scenes.

From mineral processing plants and materials handling infrastructure to compressed air networks, rotary equipment performs some of the most critical functions across mining operations.

Unlike mobile fleets, these assets often operate continuously, making reliability essential to maintaining production. When a gearbox or compressor fails unexpectedly, the impact can extend well beyond a single machine, disrupting production, increasing maintenance costs and affecting operational efficiency.

"When a haul truck stops, everybody notices immediately," says Cooks. "Rotary equipment tends to operate in the background, but its contribution to an operation is no less important. When a gearbox or compressor fails, the impact can be significant."
