Five Plant-Hire Mistakes That Can Delay a Construction Project
Written by: Linda Janse Van Vuuren Save to Instapaper
Hiring the right equipment should make a construction job easier. Unfortunately, a few poor decisions can have the opposite effect.
If the wrong machine arrives—or it cannot get onto the site—the entire project may grind to a halt. Workers are left waiting; deadlines start slipping and costs quickly add up.
Here are five mistakes worth avoiding when hiring plant equipment.
1. Choosing the Wrong Machine
A TLB, excavator and tipper truck might all be common on construction sites, but they are not interchangeable.
According to Jaundre’s Plant Hire, the project scope, expected duration and site conditions should all be considered before equipment is booked. These details help the hire company recommend a machine that can complete the work efficiently.
A TLB is useful for general digging, trenching, loading and site preparation. An excavator is usually the better choice for deep excavation, demolition and heavier work. Tipper trucks are needed when soil, rubble or building materials must be moved.
Don’t choose a machine simply because it has the lowest daily rate. Explain exactly what needs to be done, including the digging depth, terrain and size of the site. A quick conversation beforehand could prevent an expensive mistake.
2. Leaving the Booking Until the Last Minute
It is easy to assume that equipment will be available whenever you need it. During busy periods, however, the right machine may already be booked elsewhere.
Booking ahead gives the hire company enough time to confirm availability, organise transport and arrange an operator when required.
Early booking is particularly important for weekend work, remote sites and projects that need equipment for several days.
3. Forgetting About Access
Sometimes the machine is right, but the site is not ready for it.
A narrow entrance, weak driveway, low power line or waterlogged patch of ground can prevent heavy equipment from reaching the work area. Even limited turning space can cause trouble for a large transporter.
Walk through the access route before delivery day. Take measurements, check the ground and let the hire company know about anything that could create a problem.
4. Not Understanding Wet and Dry Hire
Wet hire includes an operator, while dry hire generally means hiring the machine on its own.
Dry hire can cost less, but only if you already have someone qualified and experienced enough to operate the equipment. An inexperienced operator may work slowly, damage the machine or put people on the site at risk.
Compare the full cost and responsibilities of both options before making a decision.
5. Focusing Only on Price
Everyone wants to keep project costs under control, but the cheapest quote is not always the cheapest option in the end.
A poorly maintained machine that breaks down can delay several teams at once. Before accepting a quote, ask about maintenance, support and what will happen if there is a problem on site.
Reliable equipment, clear communication and quick assistance are often worth far more than a small saving on the daily rate.
A little planning before hiring can prevent days of frustration later. Choose carefully, book early and make sure the hire company understands the job before the equipment leaves its yard.
