South Africans Encouraged to Shape Kidney Cancer Care - Global Patient Survey Now Open
Written by: Campaigning for Cancer Save to Instapaper
South Africans affected by kidney cancer now have the opportunity to help shape the future of cancer care. The 4th Global Patient Survey on Kidney Cancer and Growths, launched by the International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC), is now open, inviting patients, caregivers, and survivors to share their experiences to improve care and outcomes globally – and here at home.
This survey, which takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete, is available in 16 international languages, including English, ensuring broad accessibility. South African participants are particularly encouraged to take part, as their responses will help achieve the goal of producing another Country-Specific Report, building on the success of the 2022 survey.
Why It Matters to South Africa
In the 2022 Global Patient Survey, South Africa achieved a major milestone by collecting more than 100 patient responses, allowing for a detailed report on the specific challenges and needs of local patients, available at: https://ikcc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/IKCC22-Country-Report_South-Africa.pdf.
One critical finding was that 70% of kidney cancer diagnoses in South Africa occur at community hospitals – a figure significantly higher than the global average.
"Understanding the unique challenges faced by kidney cancer patients in South Africa is crucial," said Lauren Pretorius, CEO of Campaigning for Cancer (C4C).
"By participating in this year’s survey, we can gather the data needed to advocate for improved resources and care for South African patients," Pretorius added.
Help Us Spread the Word
The IKCC and C4C are urging all South Africans to help raise awareness by sharing the survey within their communities. Patients, caregivers, and survivors are encouraged to complete the survey, while healthcare professionals and advocates are invited to post the survey link on their websites and social media to help reach the target of 100 local responses.
"We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the 2022 International Kidney Cancer Coalition survey, which enabled the production of a South African-specific report. As a cancer advocacy organisation, we encourage continued participation in this year's survey so we can once again generate important local data," said Pretorius.
"This is essential for improving our understanding of kidney cancer and ensuring better patient care," she concluded.
