Athletes guide to lifestyle choices of food and exercise to achieve a healthy skin
Written by: Dr Sujata Garach Save to Instapaper
Good health both physical and mental is something all active people strive for and usually achieve with relative ease once they have set their goals into place.
Such people are Athletes.
Many of us consider ourselves as athletes, as we dress and exercise like them and hoping to be as disciplined when it comes to lifestyle choices of food, exercise, and skincare.
For athletes, skin health can be achieved with little effort as exercising leads to an increased blood flow to the skin, removing all toxins by the simple physiological effect of sweating in wet, dry and during seasonal changes.
Following a few simple steps can make all the difference.
Food Choices
Food plays an integral part of a healthy body both in and out.
Performance and endurance are very important to an athlete as you are what you eat.
Many of us who do exercise use food as a reward for our workout.
The energy output with the workout is usually less than the energy input of the reward given, resulting in poor skin and overall health.
A diet rich in Vitamin A foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots, fish(tuna), winter squashes, dark leafy greens, cantaloupe, lettuce, bell peppers, pink grapefruit, and broccoli promote healthy functioning of skin cells making skin look its best.
Eating more flavonoids keeps your body staying healthy.
Flavonoids, found in fruits, vegetables, tea, and chocolates are most beneficial to a radiant, blemish free skin as they are rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, helping your body remove everyday toxins.
Skin Care Treatments
Self-medicating your skin issues can lead to an incorrect diagnosis.
Diseases such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, impetigo and herpes are common with contact sports may be transmitted in the shower room and on equipment.
Athletes can benefit from many aesthetic treatments.
Excessive sweating can be treated effectively with botulinum toxin and microneedling with radiofrequency.
The Secret RF by Cutera has shown a 40% decrease in underarm sweating two weeks after the first session.
Three sessions are adequate to destroy the sweat glands.
Many active patients opt for laser hair removal for ingrown hair and treatments are done every 4-6 weeks for 8-10 sessions for optimal results.
Many other treatments such as skin peels help to enhance the skin glow.
An effective skin care routine is equally as important as a healthy lifestyle.
It is less time consuming and cost effective when you are trying to solve skin issues such as acne and other skin infections.
