Groundbreaking Breast Cancer Awareness Program Launched in South Africa, Powered by Phithos Technologies' Digital Innovation
Submitted by: Vanessa PerumalJohannesburg, South Africa – October 2024 — In a significant step towards addressing breast cancer literacy and healthcare disparities in South Africa, Phithos Technologies, in collaboration with the Breast Health Foundation (BHF), has launched the world’s first comprehensive Breast Cancer Awareness Program powered by the innovative health-tech platform, Phylaxis.ai. Supported by Novartis and recognized by the Alliance and Partnerships for Patient Innovation and Solutions (APPIS) as one of the top three winners of their 2024 Innovator Program, this initiative aims to revolutionize breast cancer awareness, screening, and early intervention across the country.
Funded by Novartis, APPIS was established in 2021 to address disparities in healthcare access across Africa, the Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. Under its Innovator Program, APPIS partners with organizations to scale innovative patient-focused solutions.
This initiative comes at a critical time as breast cancer cases continue to rise in South Africa. The National Cancer Registry reports a doubling of cases from 2000 to 2020, with breast cancer now accounting for 14-30% of all cancers in women. The program particularly aims to address the significant disparities in screening and treatment access, especially among marginalized communities.
About the BHF Program
The Breast Health Foundation (BHF) is a non-profit organization focused on raising breast cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment efforts across South Africa. Louise Turner, Chief Operations Officer at BHF, explained: “The aim of the program is to improve women’s knowledge of breast cancer while addressing misconceptions and superstitions that prevent many women from seeking medical advice.”
BHF will deploy patient navigators to clinics in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga, conducting assessments with patients. Turner added, “Anyone in South Africa can use the assessment at no cost.”
Innovative Technology Driving Early Detection
Developed by Phithos Technologies, the Phylaxis.ai platform combines medical science with predictive analytics to promote personalized, preventative healthcare. Kabelo Sejaphala, Program Director at Phithos Technologies, highlighted the program's transformative potential: "By leveraging a data-driven approach, we are breaking barriers in healthcare and breast cancer awareness, ensuring access to early detection and prevention resources."
Empowering Women and Tackling Health Disparities
The Phylaxis.ai platform provides users with personalized reports, helping women better understand their breast cancer risks and early detection methods. The technology addresses myths, identifies knowledge gaps, and offers crucial information on signs, symptoms, and treatments.
Dr. Bradley Max Segal, Chief Health AI Officer of Phithos Technologies, emphasized: "This innovative program is shifting the landscape of breast cancer awareness by delivering personalized educational content that improves early detection rates."
Lovkesh Arora, CEO of Phithos Technologies, stressed the importance of personalized healthcare: "Our mission is to provide affordable, high-quality preventative healthcare services that align with the 'Right to Health' principle and reduce the national disease burden."
