The 100 - Women's Health in Their Own Words by WellBeings Africa for Women's Month
Written by: Charlene Naidoo Save to Instapaper
In honour of Women's Month, we wanted to create something a little different. What does women's health truly mean? So, we asked women across Africa, and they told their stories. The 100: Women's Health in Their Own Words is a special collection of 100 reflections, insights, and perspectives that speak to the everyday realities of women's health.
The publication captures a moment in time rather than offering answers: contributors (many of whom chose to remain anonymous) speak candidly about menopause, PCOS, endometriosis, chronic illness, maternal mental health, medical dismissal, and self-care. Their accounts sit alongside commentary from WellBeings Africa's Medical Advisory Panel and research drawn from the World Health Organization, the United Nations Population Fund, and other bodies.
Women's health and everyday realities
We believe that women's health deserves the same openness we've created around mental health. It deserves to be spoken about without embarrassment. Women don't stop being women on 10 August. And women's health should matter every day of the year.
African medical history
The collection also revisits overlooked figures in African medical history, including Dr Mary Susan Malahlela, the first Black woman to qualify as a medical doctor in South Africa, and Oreoluwa Green, West Africa's first female pharmacist.
The 100 is available now on WellBeings Africa's platform. https://wellbeingsafrica.com/womens-health-in-their-own-words-hub/
