Baby Line to Support New Mothers at Upcoming Hospital Visit in Durban

Baby Line, a national counselling and support service for vulnerable mothers, will conduct its next KwaZulu-Natal hospital outreach on 24 March 2026 at Durban’s Victoria Mxenge Hospital.
The initiative forms part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to provide practical and emotional support to mothers navigating the early stages of motherhood, particularly those facing financial or social challenges.
Supporting Mothers In Their Most Vulnerable Moments
Baby Line operates as both an online and telephone counselling service, offering guidance and support to mothers in crisis. In addition, the organisation coordinates regular hospital visits where volunteers engage directly with mothers in maternity wards.
During these visits, care bags containing essential items such as baby clothing, toiletries, and hygiene products are distributed to mothers who have recently given birth. These items, while simple, provide meaningful support during a critical and often overwhelming period.
Creating Moments Of Care And Connection
Beyond material support, Baby Line volunteers spend time connecting with mothers, offering encouragement, listening to their experiences, and celebrating the arrival of their newborns.
These interactions create a supportive environment where mothers can feel seen, heard, and reassured as they begin their parenting journey.
Tatum Teunissen, National Coordinator of Baby Line, emphasised the importance of these engagements.
“Meeting the moms and hearing their stories is incredibly powerful. Many of these women are in very difficult circumstances, yet the love they have for their babies is immense. Sometimes something as simple as a pack of wet wipes or a baby outfit can bring real relief and encouragement in those first overwhelming days. Our hope is that every mother we meet leaves knowing that someone cares and that she is not alone.”
Growing A National Support Network
Baby Line continues to expand its outreach by visiting hospitals across different communities each month, with the aim of reaching more mothers and newborns nationwide.
As the programme grows, the organisation is working to increase its impact and extend its support network to more vulnerable families across South Africa.
