International Podiatry Day
Written by: Olivia Jones Communications Save to Instapaper
The all-too-often-overlooked feet will get their day in the spotlight on 8 October with the celebration of International Podiatry Day. This is an opportunity to recognise the importance of foot health, while also acknowledging the role of podiatrists who care for feet, and healthcare workers who are on their feet daily.
“Foot health cannot be overstated, and we’re committed to celebrating International Podiatry Day by creating awareness about the importance of our feet,” commented Lynsey Hammond, Managing Director of Kroko, a trusted South African manufacturer of skincare and footcare products.
“While we advocate for the correct care and use of our Kroko products for at-home use to support foot health, we also encourage people to visit podiatrists for any recurring foot health issues to ensure their feet are protected and to treat any serious issues before they impact the overall health and wellness”, she said.
Fast and Fun Foot Facts!
- The foot has 33 joints and more than 100 ligaments.
- Each foot has 26 bones, so there are 52 foot bones in all, which is 25.24% of the body’s total bone count.
- The foot has around 125,000 sweat glands producing around 230ml of sweat a day.
- The average person walks about 7 500 steps a day – the equivalent of 5 laps around the equator in a lifetime.
- The foot has more nerve endings per cm2 than any other part of the body.
- The skin on your feet is thicker than any other body part.
- 20% to 30% of the world’s population have a longer second toe than big toe (called a Morton’s Toe!), and this can increase the risk of calluses.
- The Achilles tendon is the strongest in the whole body.
- Abnormalities with the feet are often the first sign of another health problem.

Kroko’s Podiatry Day Donation
Kroko would like to give more people the opportunity to try some of our footcare range of products this Podiatry Day, and will give away hampers to the first 5 people who write in to tell us why they could use this gift and will send us a video or image of them using the products. 1. Kroko Heel Balm: This replenishing heel balm contains urea and Vitamin D to provide long-lasting hydration for feet. This is ideal for people who work in closed shoes on their feet all day, which can lead to dry, cracked heels. Kroko Heel Balm is an at-home solution providing instant relief and can be used every day. It can also be used on the elbows.
2. Kroko HeelFix: This liquid application can be applied directly to cracked heels. This is a fast-acting solution that covers deep cracks with a waterproof, hygienic barrier to allow for natural healing.
3. Kroko Corn Protectors: Corns can be a common condition for many people who wear closed shoes or sports shoes, and Kroko’s Corn Protectors provide much-needed relief. The doughnut-shaped foam cushion surrounds the corn and is held in place by wrapping the 2 ends of the plaster around the toe and overlapping these to hold the pad in place to prevent friction against a hard shoe. This can be used alongside Kroko’s Corn and Callus Remover ointment.
4. Kroko Foot Powder: Wearing closed shoes all day, particularly going into summer, can make feet sweat excessively - particularly as each foot has 125,000 sweat glands! Kroko Foot Powder can be applied directly to the foot or inside the shoe. This helps keep shoes dry and odour-free while also reducing the risk of athlete’s foot, black toenails and other fungi and bacteria which thrive in moist conditions.
