We are raising a glass to the strong women behind the bar this month, for serving creativity and flair with every cocktail!

It is an incredible sight to watch a master of their craft at work – and mixologists are no different. The deft preciseness of every movement as individual ingredients become one in a harmony of flavour. But even bartenders deserve to take a break and have a drink, so we are taking an inside look into a few of our favourite female bartenders in the game’s favourite cocktails!

Charne van Heerden from House of Machines keeps it classic with an Old Fashioned – you can never go wrong!

Old Fashioned

Ingredients:

  • 60ml bourbon
  • 7ml simple syrup
  • 2 dashes ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters
  • 1 dash ANGOSTURA® orange bitters
  • Splash of water
  • Orange peel to garnish

Method:

Build in a rocks glass, stir with ice to incorporate ingredients. Add ice. Garnish with a long orange peel.

Cassandra Eichhoff from EBS goes for something a little different with her top pick – a Cuba Libre with a special twist, as mixed by fellow bartender George Hunter from Copper Monkey.

Cuba Libre

Ingredients:

  • 60ml spiced rum
  • 120ml coca cola
  • 15ml fresh lime juice
  • 4 dashes ANGOSTURA® bitters
  • Lime wheel
  • ANGOSTURA® bitters flavoured
  • ice cubes*

Method:

Add the lime juice to a collins or highball glass. Add in the ice cubes and rum. Top up with coca cola and stir gently. Finally, garnish with a lime wheel. It’s simple but it goes a long way!

* The trick to this drink are the ice cubes - use a smaller ice cube tray with filtered water and 5ml of ANGOSTURA® per cube - this way you can use more ice in a drink and allow the cubes to gently dilute into the drink without overpowering the rum.
