Reflecting on its history, SA Chefs celebrates a journey that has elevated South African cuisine and placed the country on the global culinary stage.
"This year, we’ve honoured our founders and the achievements that shaped SA Chefs into what it is today," said Chef Coo Pillay, the newly elected president of SA Chefs. "We stand on the shoulders of giants, inspired to push culinary boundaries as we move forward."
Key Milestones Over Five Decades
The Birth of a Culinary Legacy (1974–1984)
- SA Chefs unified chefs across South Africa and raised national culinary standards.
- By 1980, South African chefs earned five gold medals at the IKA Culinary Olympics, establishing an international reputation.
International Recognition and Community Impact (1984–1994)
- Chef Paul Bocuse attended the InfoChef gala banquet in 1986, enhancing SA Chefs’ international prestige.
- In 1992, South African chefs won 18 gold medals at the Culinary Olympics.
- The inaugural World Chefs Tour Against Hunger raised R500,000 for Operation Hunger in 1993, reflecting SA Chefs’ commitment to community upliftment.
Leadership on the Global Stage (1994–2004)
- South Africa hosted the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) offices in 1996.
- Dr Billy Gallagher, SA Chefs’ Honorary Life President, served as World President of WACS.
- The second World Chefs Tour Against Hunger in 1996 raised R1.5 million for South African charities.
