The anticipation is building for one of the most prestigious events on the South African wine calendar, the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event, set to take place on Thursday, 5 February 2026, hosted at the country’s oldest wine-producing farm, Groot Constantia Wine Estate.
This annual celebration will mark 367 years of South African wine, commemorating the birthday of the wine industry and the first recorded wine made from Cape grapes on 2 February 1659. The event honours the heritage, innovation, and people who continue to shape this world-renowned industry, from pioneering visionaries to the hardworking individuals who bring each harvest to life.
With South Africa proudly standing as the 8th largest wine-producing country in the world, the 6th largest wine exporter by volume, and responsible for 3.9% of global wine production in 2024, the celebration comes at a time when the sector continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and economic significance.
Celebrating the Journey of the South African Wine Harvest
Under the 2026 theme, “Celebrating the Journey of the South African Wine Harvest”, the event reflects on the enduring relationship between nature, time, and the vine.
“The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is a moment to pause, to reflect on our shared journey, and to look ahead with optimism,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia. “It celebrates growth, not just in our vineyards, but in our people, our culture, and our collective spirit. Each glass of South African wine tells a story of resilience, creativity, and connection that has grown stronger over generations.”
Honouring Excellence Across Five Pillars of the Industry
Each year, outstanding contributors are recognised in five prestigious categories, representing the pillars that sustain the South African wine industry:
- 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership – Celebrating exceptional leaders whose foresight and innovation have shaped the future of wine.
- Growing Inclusivity – Recognising individuals or organisations championing diversity, empowerment, and transformation.
- Wine Advancement – Honouring efforts that elevate the reputation and global appreciation of South African wine.
- Viti- and Viniculture – Acknowledging scientific progress, research, and sustainable practices in grape growing and winemaking.
- Wine Agri-Worker – Celebrating the invaluable vineyard, cellar, and farm workers who form the backbone of the industry.
Voices of the Industry
Reflecting on this milestone, Rico Basson, CEO of South Africa Wine, comments, “Each harvest is a reminder of how far we’ve come as an industry and a community of people bound by love, perseverance, and purpose. The South African wine sector contributes billions to our economy and sustains thousands of livelihoods, but its actual value lies in the people behind every vine, barrel, and bottle. Each year’s harvest is a measure of growth. But it's also a celebration of resilience and renewal. It reflects our shared belief that through our bond with everything wine, innovation, and hard work, South African wine will continue to inspire pride at home and admiration worldwide.”
Adding to this, Ivan Meyer, Minister of Agriculture, emphasises the far-reaching value of the industry, “The South African wine industry is more than a source of world-class wines; it is a cornerstone of economic growth and a catalyst for job creation across our rural communities. Its contribution extends beyond the vineyards, driving tourism and showcasing our country’s rich heritage to the world. The recent recognition at the World Tourism Awards reaffirms the pivotal role wine plays in positioning South Africa as a premier destination for authentic experiences.
This year’s Wine Harvest Commemorative Event honours excellence across five pillars: visionary leadership, inclusivity, wine advancement, scientific innovation in viticulture and viniculture, and the invaluable contribution of agri-workers. These categories reflect the heart of our industry — its people. Transformation and dignity are not optional; they are essential to building a sector that is fair, inclusive, and sustainable. Every award is a reminder that progress is measured not only in litres produced or bottles exported, but in the lives uplifted and opportunities created for all South Africans.”
A Celebration of Legacy and Collaboration
The evening will feature a black-tie dinner, live entertainment, and the official blessing of the new harvest. “The spirit of collaboration that drives this event is what keeps the South African wine industry thriving,” adds Naudé. “From farmers to exporters, from cellar hands to sommeliers, this is our collective story of growth, care, and shared success.”
