A chardonnay from the Nuy Valley in the Breede River has achieved outstanding recognition from a prestigious international judging panel. In the latest Gilbert & Gaillard International Wine Challenge, Nuy Wine Cellar was awarded 92 points for its 2022 Nuy Mastery Chardonnay, taking home a coveted double gold medal.
ABOUT GILBERT & GAILLARD INTERNATIONAL WINE CHALLENGE
Founded in France thirty years ago, the Gilbert & Gaillard Challenge today also involves wine judging in Spain, Italy, South Africa, and elsewhere. Entries are judged quarterly in the country of origin by a French tasting panel that scores according to the 100-point system as well as awarding double gold, gold and silver. Scores over 90 are deemed outstanding.
JUDGES FEEDBACK AND TASTING NOTES
The judges praised Nuy’s Chardonnay as “layered and complex”, advising "drink through 2028”. The wooded Chardonnay spent 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, with lees contact to enhance fruit and oak integration. According to the judging panel, the Chardonnay has a rich and full nose with hints of dried citrus and vanilla pod that continue onto the palate, where a creaminess and layers of citrus and stone fruit present themselves.
