The Mzantsi Jazz Awards Announces the Winners of its 8th Annual Jazz Awards

The Mzantsi Jazz Awards (MJA) is delighted to reveal the winners of the 8th Mzantsi Jazz Awards, held at the Soweto Theatre on Saturday, 31 August 2024. The event attracted a notable assembly of media representatives, musicians, jazz enthusiasts, and business partners.

The MJA was a night to remember, filled with poignant performances and heartfelt tributes. The event not only celebrated the current talents of the jazz world but also paid homage to the legends who have shaped its history.

A Memorable Celebration of Jazz

The festivities kicked off with an opening act by Kaldi Makutike and MoAfrica wa Mokgathi, who also served as the MC for the evening. Their fusion of poetry and dance captivated the audience and set the tone for an evening of exquisite artistry.

The celebration featured interlude performances by Thandeka Dladla, Kujenga, Mlungisi Gegana, and Sibongile Buda – JCFI Music Ensemble, among others. Each performance added a unique rhythm to the event, showcasing the diversity and depth of South African jazz.

Honouring Legends of Jazz

Mark Fransman delivered a eulogy for the departed jazz legends, paying tribute to Julian Bahula, Tony Cedras, Musa Manzini, Makhaya Ntshoko, and other late icons who made a lasting impact on the jazz genre.

This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon Mum Abigail Kubeka, recognising her enduring dedication, significant achievements, and substantial contributions to the realm of jazz music. This accolade reflects her iconic status and her role as a pillar of inspiration for generations of musicians.
