Pretoria, South Africa – On 15 August 2026, the 10th South Africa Jazz Awards (affectionately known as the Mzantsi Jazz Awards) lit up the South African State Theatre with a night of unforgettable music, heartfelt tributes, and historic milestones.
One of the evening’s most powerful highlights was the presentation of the Best African Jazz Album/Artist Award, a public vote category that reflects the global influence of African jazz. Sponsored by PF Music in Nigeria, this award is a significant recognition for artists who have made a substantial impact on the jazz scene from across the continent and are celebrated for their contributions to the genre.
The award went to Dotun Bankole, a celebrated Nigerian jazz artist, for his moving song “Olugbala.” Bankole’s artistry and dedication to the craft have made him a visible voice in African jazz, and this recognition cements his place among the continent’s finest.
Recognition for African Jazz Excellence
The celebration of African excellence did not stop there. Another Nigerian artist, Ola Onabulé, was honoured with the award for Best International Jazz Album/Artist for his album “It’s Never Over.” His win underscored the universal reach of African-rooted jazz and its ability to inspire audiences worldwide. This category has previously been won by luminaries like Boney James, Branford Marsalis and Moreira Chonguica.
The South Africa Jazz Awards, now proudly rebranded from the Mzantsi Jazz Awards, mark the beginning of a new decade. By embracing their new name, the Awards claim their rightful place on both the South African and global stage, standing as a premier platform for jazz excellence.
A Decade of Celebration
For ten years, the Awards have celebrated jazz not only as entertainment but as a force that uplifts and heals both artist and listener. This year’s anniversary was a testament to that mission, with performances, tributes, and awards that honoured the past while looking boldly to the future.
