Why Vinyl Flooring is Making a Comeback

Vinyl flooring has been around since 1894 when it made its entrance into homes in the form of rubber floor tiles which were durable, helped deaden sounds, were easy to clean and easy to install. However, they deteriorated over time when exposed to oxygen, solvents and alkaline. They also stained easily.

In 1926, the product was improved when Polyvinyl chloride, known as PVC, was invented. However, vinyl was very scarce during the war years, and vinyl flooring was not widely marketed until the 1940s. It eventually became one of the most popular flooring options.

Carpeting, ceramic tiles and wooden flooring eventually replaced the old linoleum and vinyl flooring. Recently, vinyl has made a comeback for both residential and commercial uses.

Vinyl Flooring for Commercial and Residential Use

Today’s vinyl floors have advanced a lot and are made to enhance a home or office using a multitude of styles, colours, and patterns. Happily, it still retains its ability to reduce noise.

Modern vinyl tiles can be cut and placed to form a company logo or guide foot traffic in hospitals and airports. Vinyl sheeting can simulate wood and ceramic tile patterns.

The beauty of vinyl flooring is that it is far more durable than in the past while it continues to provide warmth and comfort underfoot. Nowadays, it is moisture and stain resistant, which also allows spills to be easily removed.

Vinyl Floor Safety

In terms of commercial applications, both vinyl sheets and tiles offer a range of non-slip surfaces which can also be easily cleaned. Due to its water tightness, it is a popular choice for hospitals, nursing and care homes. As it has fewer seams than other types of flooring, it also minimises any contaminants from getting stuck in any hard to clean places.

Vinyl Floors in Sports Facilities

Vinyl sheet flooring is also becoming popular with sporting facilities as it is low on maintenance and easy to clean. The foam underlay provides a shock-absorbent cushion to reduce sports fatigue.

Another reason to consider vinyl flooring is that it is cost-effective and does not have to be replaced as often as other flooring types. Although it is tough and resistant to daily abuse, proper cleaning and maintenance, as per the manufacturer’s instructions, will ensure a longer life span.

Advantages of Vinyl Flooring

  • Water-resistant – can be used in high humidity rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens
  • Easy to clean, low maintenance
  • Can be recycled
  • High durability
  • Soft walking sound
