Recycled Bicycles - A Unique Holiday Experience at Cape Grace
Written by: Nestlé Nespresso SA Save to Instapaper
December 2024: This summer, Cape Town’s iconic Cape Grace Hotel introduces an exciting new way to explore the Mother City—on Vélosophy RE:CYCLE bicycles, crafted from recycled Nespresso coffee capsules.
A Partnership for Sustainability
Swedish lifestyle brand Vélosophy and Nespresso have collaborated to create the RE:CYCLE bicycles, using aluminium recycled from Nespresso coffee capsules. Nespresso’s global recycling practices and sustainable farming initiatives under their AAA Sustainable Quality™ Programme underline their belief that coffee can be a force for good.
Key features of the bicycles include:
- 95% recycled aluminium frames, inspired by Nespresso’s Ice Leggero capsule.
- A bell designed in the shape of a Vertuo capsule.
- A steam-bended oak basket with cup holders for Nespresso on-the-go.
Cape Grace: Leading the Way
As the first hotel in South Africa to offer this unique guest experience, Cape Grace reinforces its commitment to sustainability. Recognised in 2024 with the prestigious Green Key certification, the hotel seamlessly integrates eco-friendly practices into its operations and community partnerships.
Guests can explore Cape Town on one of 10 uniquely named bicycles, including Grace, Two Oceans, Penguin, and Sharkie. Each booking includes:
- Helmets for safety.
- Detailed maps for navigation.
- Secure chains and locks for spontaneous stops.
A Seamless Experience
Upon check-in, guests are introduced to the service and can reserve bicycles via the concierge or front desk. Before their journey, guests complete a quick indemnity form and provide a contact number for seamless communication. Bicycles must be returned before sunset, and all equipment is meticulously sanitised after use to ensure guest comfort and safety.
Sustainability at the Heart of Cape Grace
The bicycles mark a new chapter in Cape Grace’s partnership with Nespresso Professional, which also powers the hotel’s in-room coffee service and breakfast area.
Hotel Manager Leon Meyer said, “Our partnership with Nespresso allows us to focus on curating special moments for our guests, while sustainability remains central to our operations.”
Director of Sales and Marketing Stacey Hopkins added, “Sustainability is a key Fairmont Hotels & Resorts pillar. The Vélosophy bikes exemplify how long-term partnerships can positively impact the environment.”
Endlessly Recyclable, Infinitely Beautiful
This initiative demonstrates that even the smallest actions, like recycling coffee capsules, can spark significant change. Cape Grace, Nespresso, and Vélosophy RE:CYCLE are redefining sustainable tourism—one pedal at a time.
