BurnStar Technologies Launches First Commercial Demonstration Unit
Written by: BurnStar Technologies Save to InstapaperTurnkey Modular; Johannesburg, 1 September 2025
BurnStar Technologies, the South African innovator behind Guilt-Free Hydrogen™, today announced the commissioning of its first commercial demonstration unit at Turnkey Modular. This milestone marks the transition of BurnStar’s patented Liquid Metal Reforming (LMR) process from pilot to scalable deployment, offering heavy industry a cost-competitive, zero-emission hydrogen alternative.
BurnStar’s pyrolysis-based process delivers hydrogen, while sequestering carbon in solid form for use in agriculture and manufacturing. Unlike electrolysis, the technology is not dependent on renewable energy availability, ensuring consistent supply and operational resilience.
“With this demonstration unit, we’re proving that large-scale hydrogen decarbonisation doesn’t have to mean high costs or disruptive infrastructure changes,” said Dr. Johan Brand, Technical Director at BurnStar Technologies. “Our Liquid Metal Bubble Column technology achieves full methane conversion with no CO₂ emissions, enabling industries like steel, refining, power, and logistics to meet climate targets while maintaining commercial viability.”
Strategic Impact for Heavy Industry
- Zero-Emission, Cost-Competitive Hydrogen, outperforming conventional grey, blue, and green hydrogen pathways.
- Integrated Carbon Sequestration; Solid carbon capture avoids CO₂release while creating secondary value chains.
- Scalable, Modular Deployment; Units produce 120 kg to 5,000 kg/day, adaptable to industrial and mobility sectors.
- De-Risked Transition; Compatible with existing natural gas sources (Mozambiquean Natural Gas, Sasol Methane Rich Gas, CNG, LNG, LPG, flare gas).
Guilt-Free Hydrogen
The partnership with Turnkey Modular provides a platform to validate BurnStar’s hydrogen technology under operational conditions, demonstrating both scalability and reliability for investors and industrial adopters.
“This deployment bridges the gap between innovation and industrial adoption,” said David de Mattos, Operations Director at BurnStar Technologies. “By removing the CapEx barrier through flexible rental models and ensuring predictable hydrogen pricing, we’re enabling energy-intensive industries to decarbonise profitably and at pace.”
