ERA NPC's Mandela Day Initiative Tackles SA's E-Waste & Youth Unemployment Crisis

In a profound observance of Nelson Mandela Day and its enduring call to service, ERA NPC successfully hosted a "67 Minutes of Impact" event, galvanising citizens, businesses, and industry partners to confront South Africa's burgeoning electronic waste (e-waste) crisis. The initiative, held on Friday, 18 July 2025, underscored ERA's commitment to advancing environmental sustainability and fostering job creation within the circular economy framework.

ERA (E-Waste Recycling Authority) is a pivotal Non-Profit Company (NPC) and Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) specialising in Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment and Lighting (WEEEL). Operational since 2018, ERA plays a crucial role in facilitating and implementing South Africa's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations, thereby positioning itself at the forefront of the nation's circular economy drive. This regulatory framework mandates producers to assume responsibility for the post-consumer stage of their products' life cycle.

A key differentiator for ERA is its profound dedication to empowering South African youth. The organisation actively creates significant employment opportunities by rigorously upskilling young individuals in the principles and practices of the circular economy. This strategic approach directly contributes to addressing both environmental degradation and the critical challenge of youth unemployment, paving the way for a more sustainable and equitable future.

The Mandela Day event saw participants dedicating 67 minutes of hands-on engagement across two activations, hosted in partnership with ERA’s specialised dismantling centres: NEED in Bridgetown and E-waste Buddies in Pinelands. This direct involvement aimed to raise awareness and inspire tangible action across both the community and business sectors regarding responsible e-waste management.

Statement from ERA CEO Ashley du Plooy:

"Every year on Mandela Day, we are profoundly reminded of the transformative power of an individual's actions to influence countless lives," stated Ashley du Plooy, ERA Chief Executive Officer. "Nelson Mandela bequeathed us not only years of dedicated service but also a powerful challenge: to perpetuate his legacy through action, compassion, and shared responsibility. At ERA NPC, we embrace this challenge wholeheartedly."

Du Plooy further articulated the dual imperatives addressed by ERA: "As we commemorated '67 Minutes of Impact,' we did so in recognition of the pressing environmental and economic crossroads our nation confronts. E-waste is proliferating at an unsustainable rate, leading to overflowing landfills. Concurrently, a significant number of young people lack opportunities, seeking purpose and employment in a challenging economic landscape. Where others perceive crisis, we at ERA identify profound potential – the opportunity to safeguard our environment and uplift our youth."

"The processes of dismantling devices, diverting e-waste from landfills, and training youth in the circular economy are indispensable steps towards realising our vision for South Africa," Du Plooy concluded. "This Mandela Day, we reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to decisive action. We urge industry leaders, producers, policymakers, and all citizens to join us. Let us collectively expand the green jobs our youth urgently require and establish systems that convert waste into a valuable resource, rather than a burden. Together, we possess the capacity to effect meaningful change and integrate impact into our daily lives, moving beyond mere events."
