The National Development Agency Supports Skills Development at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects
Submitted by: Frieda Pehlivan PehlivanThe National Development Agency (NDA) demonstrated its commitment to empowering youth and promoting skills development by presenting a cheque worth R390,000 to the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) on June 6, 2023. The funding approval was announced during a special event that showcased the Turkish Coordination and Cooperation Agency's (TIKA) contribution to a newly refurbished vocational workshop at the Learn to Live School of Skills, which was also funded by TIKA.
At the handover ceremony, Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu and Mr Ardiel Soeker, NDA Western Cape Provincial Manager, symbolically signed and handed over the cheque, reaffirming their unwavering support for SIYP's skills development programmes. The NDA's financial backing will be allocated to the Stitch Ahead Programme, a transformative initiative designed to empower women from marginalized backgrounds.
The Stitch Ahead Programme is a three-month training course that equips young individuals with essential hand and machine sewing techniques. By providing these skills, the programme aims to enhance employment prospects and foster entrepreneurial ventures among the participants. The primary objective is to empower women from marginalized backgrounds and create opportunities for them to thrive in the competitive job market or establish their own successful enterprises.
“The NDA's generous funding will enable SIYP to expand the reach and impact of the Stitch Ahead Programme, ensuring that more young individuals can benefit from this empowering initiative. By investing in skills development, the NDA and SIYP are committed to addressing youth unemployment and promoting sustainable socio-economic growth in South Africa”, said Mr John Doidge SIYP Board member.
Speaking about the funding, Minister Lindiwe Zulu expressed her gratitude to the NDA and TIKA for their continued support in uplifting and empowering young individuals at SIYP. She highlighted the importance of skills development programmes in equipping the youth with the necessary tools to build a prosperous future. Minister Zulu also commended SIYP for their dedication and tireless efforts in implementing impactful initiatives that positively transform the lives of marginalized youth.
The National Development Agency (NDA) and the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) remain resolute in their commitment to empowering South Africa's youth through skills development. The NDA's financial support will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the Stitch Ahead Programme, opening doors of opportunity and fostering a brighter future for young women from marginalized backgrounds.
